Star Wars was the only game in town when we were young, and the spectacle of it was incredible at the time. Plus tweens didn't exist, and what used to be one demographic has been split into several. I don't think kids have changed all that much, but their world is saturated with storytelling choice in a way ours wasn't.

Thinking of the fandoms of my little cousins (8-10 years old)
They seem to be big into harry potter, assassins creed, walking dead, transformers.
for halloween the kids dressed up as harry potter and suicide squad.
None of them seem to care of star wars too much.

Right after T2 showed me a glimpse of future movie tech I began craving a future of movies not limited by technology.

Then came Jurassic Park proving that what T2 showed us was just the tip of the iceberg.

After JP I couldn't wait to see what cgi was going to do for star wars, giant monsters and superheroes.

Fast forward 26 years after T2 and here we are in cinema overload and all I can say is that after IW, JL and E9 i'm taking a break and will just sit back and enjoy some T2 and Robocop. :lol

Yeah after T2 and JP I honestly expected all the visuals we're enjoying today to have been the norm in the late 90's. Took long enough. :lol

Dont forget after T2 and jurassic we got the visual garbage that is jar jar, the prequels, van helsing, the mumny 2. The vomit that was the first hulk.
The early 2000s were rough as hell for some cgi movies...

If anything T2 and JP open the gates for truly hideous terrible movies that relied on a rechnology that should not have been abused lol.

The same with HD for the home. :gah:

Japanese were watching HD a good few years before us.

This is true, it almost went backwards from JP. :lol

I totally remember hearing that we were all going to have HD in time for the 1996 Summer Olympics. :lol

Yep, and after Forrest Gump I assumed that putting dead actors in movies would be the easiest thing in the world by now. Nope. :lol

It was predictable enough (in hindsight). Film makers felt that spectacle was enough, and elevated it above good storytelling.

The biggest irony being that aftet 26 years from T2 the thing that people were most excited about and most anticipating was the practical effects of force awakens lol.

Khev, I feel like watching RO again. :panic:

Let's do it! Let's do it one more time!! :rock :panic:

The great thing about T2 was that the effects were so difficult to achieve at the time, and pretty limited - mostly, the effects had a "natural" feel to them (the reality of a liquid metal man aside). More advanced CGI led to a whole bunch of playing around and pushing everything to the max. I think the camera and choreography are the greatest culprits here, not necessarily the "look" of CGI. Case study #1: Ninja Yoda.

It's just not special like it once was.

Is this part of the reason the prequels were so poorly received? Yes, they had their flaws, but they also weren't the game-changers the original films were.

The PT also suffers because it's only compared to the OT. Maybe if it was compared to other films in general it would fare better?

No, I actually think they'd be forgotten faster.

Without the Star Wars label they're just another few films in a long line of poor sci-fi movies IMO. They'd probably have never gotten off the ground. But I think it's far too hard to imagine them as anything else but Star Wars movies because you have the aforementioned issue.

I suspect it's more to do with the storytelling and characterisation.

That's awesome, especially if you didn't know there was going to be a space battle. I mean seriously, keeping a ROTJ quality space battle with modern visuals a *secret* until it plays out on screen? I never would have imagined that I could ever experience such an event totally cold.

I purposefully avoided all spoilers. Just wanted a pure viewing and my honest feelings watching it without forming an opinion going in.

I knew people were super happy with the final battle and i knew the effects were amazing because of youtube reviews but even if i knew i was still amazed by the visuals.

When the ships show up from hyper speed and then the low angle point of view of some of the ships was one of the greatest star wars scenes ive even seen.

Seeing ships crash against each other was shockingly good.

I wish the final battle was made into a star wars ride at disney. A second ride. The disney ride wasnt as good as that scene

That's pretty sweet that even with the movie spoiled you were still blown sway seeing it the first time crows.

As for seeing Scarif in a Disney ride, just give it time. ;)

Damn crows be firing on all cylinders on this one.

Glad you enjoyed it and yes even with repeat viewings it remains shockingly good.

I'm with Lejuan here. They just aren't good movies, period. Overall narrative is convoluted and not very fulfilling, dialogue is bad, characters are not particularly likable or compelling, even with good actors playing some of them, action is hit-and-miss, CG is cheesy and distracting many times, comedy is atrocious.

I purposefully avoided all spoilers. Just wanted a pure viewing and my honest feelings watching it without forming an opinion going in.
Same here. It was easier for me since my interest wasn't that high to begin with, but I've been spoiled many times on this forum going to random threads not connected to the film in reference. I've actually gone to see movies earlier than I otherwise would just to avoid seeing spoilers on more than one occasion. So, this was a nice exception.
