Maybe if it was compared to other films in general it would fare better?

That's pretty sweet that even with the movie spoiled you were still blown sway seeing it the first time crows.

As for seeing Scarif in a Disney ride, just give it time. ;)

It is very funny to me how i knew everything about the movie and i saw the clips of leia and vader, i knew everyone died, there were no surprises yet the last act made me feel nervous and excited.
I knew they would succeed in their plan but the scene of the pilot needing to get the cable plugged and the scene of the asian guy walking towards the switch.
I knew they would achieve their goal yet i remember feeling nervous of the tension created.

Then the vader scene was just as tense even though i saw it on YouTube. I remember feeling their desperation to get the plans out and the tension of vader being like a predator going after his prey.

Is this part of the reason the prequels were so poorly received? Yes, they had their flaws, but they also weren't the game-changers the original films were.

The PT also suffers because it's only compared to the OT. Maybe if it was compared to other films in general it would fare better?

I think without the Star Wars moniker, a movie like AOTC would be thought of in the same vein as Jupiter Ascending.

Second viewing tonight. Lots of great detail going on in the background. I really love how they studied episode iv and made the aesthetic match up. Red and gold leaders made me very happy.

I was surprised RO or TFA didn't copy some of those cheesy 70s editing cuts we saw in ANH, where they would use the sweep to go from one shot or scene to the other. There are so many subtle ways to copy elements of a movie (framing scenes in a similar way, using that same lens). Think of those shot for shot remakes, etc. Would be interesting if some of those techniques were incorporated to further give it a similar feel.

TFA used screen wipes though much more sparingly than the OT (and mostly in the first third of the movie.)

They were nowhere to be found in RO though. I think RO might have even finally retired the Wilhelm scream.

Same here. Seeing red and gold leader was a minor thing the passive movie goer wouldn't think about, but to me it was such an AWESOME touch. This film was full of little nods without trying to be over the top corny IMO.

I read an interview somewhere they were originally going to use wipes but then decided not to.

I think those were the best. The Walrus Man one would have been better if they were just in the background of the mining city. Having them on Jedha milling about right before it blows up seems a little silly, but that's a pretty minor nitpick.
