hi guys,

i'm deciding to sell away some hot toys to start collecting some star wars figures. mainly this line and the black series. does these 2 series compliment well with each other? are their scale too off or just about right to mix and match?

looking forward to your advices! thanks!

The 6" Black Series line has gone down the drain. It started out great with the first wave, but quickly went downhill (typical Hasbro). Check out this video that compares the figuart Jedi Luke to the BS Jedi Luke (starts at 11:53). There is just no comparison. In terms of quality, I don't think Black Series figures compliment Figuarts at all. Seems Hasbro is just not interested in producing quality toys for collectors.

thanks. i saw this video before. other that quality, what about size scale?

He puts the figuarts Luke next to Black Series Han near the end of the video and the scale looks good to me.

I don't think there is a problem with the scale. The only real issue will probably be the lack of character selection from Figuarts. I doubt we will see the variety of figures from them as we see from Hasbro, but I could be wrong since Figuarts Star Wars sells out in an instant! Hopefully that will be motivation for Bandai to produce a large selection of SW figures.

The scale is fine. However, the quality difference is the problem. I've just sold all my Black Series stuff.

The human figures absolutely do NOT stand up, except maybe X-wing Luke.

The troopers look okay but not perfect. The only ones I considered keeping were the TIE pilot and Cody.

The Aliens fit in the best. Greedo and Bossk looked quite good next to Jedi Luke.

As for the rest, the only other figures that I considered keeping were Greedo, Bossk and the TIE pilot.

Kenobi, Battle Droid, and Clone Trooper still available for PO at CDJapan if anyone is still looking for these.

[...] i'm deciding to sell away some hot toys to start collecting some star wars figures. mainly this line and the black series. does these 2 series compliment well with each other? are their scale too off or just about right to mix and match? [...]

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't put them together. They are not the same class of product. Even the best Black Series figures (Boba Fett, X-Wing Luke, Sandtrooper) will appear to have an inferior material and finish. I'm a big believer in quality over quantity. I'd rather have fewer SHF than any number of Black Series. I think SHF is money well-spent.

Black Series was something I would cherry pick the best releases from, back when they were the only option in this scale, but I feel they have been rendered obsolete by superior products.

[...]Seems Hasbro is just not interested in producing quality toys for collectors.[...]

When they were the only game in town, they didn't need to be interested in that. And even now, people still buy them citing they're cheaper or that the line goes deeper. It's a quantity over quality mindset I don't follow.

There may be people who genuinely enjoy them for what they are, if so more power to them, but there is so much better available now if your criteria are high quality and finish.

SHF makes mistakes and the line will have its inconsistencies, but I feel their worst is still better than Hasbro's best.

You would think that after seeing the quality of Figuarts Hasbro would step-up their game rather than just block the sales of competitors in order to protect their monopoly of selling crap quality products. SW fans deserve better than Hasbro!

They don't need to step up their game and they don't care what people "deserve". Millions of people still buy their crap, why change?

@Orbital can we expect some awesome sw figuarts art here?:naughty

I will make some things, like this version of the vintage cardback :wave

@Bane: ;)

This is the real problem. As long as Hasbro has customers willing to line up to buy their crap toys then nothing will improve. Wholeheartedly agree.

Edit: yeah basically agree with all last few posts. Some people think bs vader is a good figure, im like, for who? Like a 12 year old at best.

Bs is still within kids-toys realm of quality. Goes for marvel legends too. Armoured stuff can look great, but anything that requires detail better than what 3,75 has done in the past isn't to be found on 6". It's upscaled 3.75" toys.

To be absolutely fair, they took advantage of the possibilities offered at this scale with some of their early sculpts when the line had promise, i.e. waves 1 and 2...but even then it was within the paradigm of cheap mass-market North American toys.

In terms of aesthetics, the 6" Sandtrooper was a game-changer compared to the 3.75" Sandtrooper; but they didn't keep that up. And even if they had, engineering, materials and paint apps for their kind of product remain far behind SHF.

I'm not even "bashing" Hasbro per se; they make a specific kind of product that remains profitable for them, but it's been completely outclassed by a true adult collector's line and for myself personally, I see no reason to pay any further attention to it.

Agreed. Tamashii isn't gonna have the character spectrum hasbro will have though, and to my surprise they seem to gonna make Revan. For exceptions like that, it's the 'no alternative' situation again.

That and army building I wouldn't waste shf money on. But I don't do that anyway.

@smit tamashii seems increasingly better at select applications of soft plastic to emulate cloth. I think this will be another case.

The 6" Black Series Vader is the sole reason I dropped collecting SW Hasbro altogether (along with their abandonment of the 25th Anniversary Joes line). If Hasbro has no interest in making a high quality 6" Vader, the flagship SW character, then I have no interest in giving them any more of my money. Figuarts are expensive to import, but worth it in my opinion.
