I think you're probably right in it being the production. Thumbs still look a little wonky to me if this is the one you saw. From SS's blog:

Yeah, that is it.. they are still too big but not as bad as some out of the box positions we saw here. Those hands are the only thing that is keeping me from picking him up but I still might, I really would like the other half of the duo.

Thumbs are wonky, but depending on how you position the various fingers, you can make it look not too bad.
On the other hand, look at Wolverine in the background... he looks much shorter than Punisher. Awesome!

Just picked up my replacement Threepio. So glad the Pistons were broken on my first figure because this one is perfect. Paint is nice and clean and the hands are actually pretty good. I don't think I need to twist the thumbs.

Finally have the whole OT gang together. Now we just need some new announcements. Anything from any Star Wars movie would be welcome at this point, but ESB or ROTJ is definitely preferred.

If we do actually get a new Dagobah/Bespin Luke, I'm thinking they're developing seamless arms for the "training with Yoda" look. Might be one of the reasons we haven't seen anything yet.

Looks nice. Despite some flaws, this is one of Sideshow's best recent figures. I'm still impressed every time I look at my display. His glinty gold just POPS so nicely.

Received my Threepio yesterday with a broken left arm piston. I was wondering if this was a common issue. Question answered.

EDIT: My seller is requesting a replacement piece from SS.

I had a broken outer-right piston and bent eye-mesh on the left eye...everything replaced by SS.

That is good to hear. 3PO is definitely missing in my collection. I keep wavering on getting him, mostly due to wacky thumbs but I am close to going for it anyways.

While I did fix the thumbs, I didn't really think they were a massive issue like some others did. Maybe it's one of those things you don't notice until someone points it out, then you can't unsee it.

This really is a pretty great figure. Not a huge fan of the facesculpt (it's maybe 80-90% there though,) but overall it "feels" more 3PO than my Tamashii, and I do still love that one.

That's a massive compliment to the SS 3PO, one you don't hear very often. But I do believe this particular SS figure has been underrated.

That being said, I did customize my SSC 3PO... quite a number of minor tweaks (eyes, collarbone spikes, mouth, thumbs, wrists) inclduing removing the choc sauce.:lol

Yeah he does. Except with limited funds, price, and so many HT releases out there... plus fear of the pistons..I passed.

The pic from FM Hippie makes me wish I could swing it.

Talibane, I'm interested in how you removed the chocolate sauce...what kind of solvent/technique did you use?
