I don't think anyone in there right mind thinks that they'll receive a paint job of that quality, but I think it illustrates the quality / likeness of the sculpt. Even with paint apps as half as good, this is looking likely to be the best mass produced Indy headsculpt we've seen by some way.

Agreed.

The main thing that worries me with the paint job is the beard/stubble. That seems to be where most paint jobs seem to fumble most during mass production. And that stubble shading also tends to distort the look and likeness most, since it affects so much of the lower half of the face.

To my eye, it's such a great sculpt and phenomenal paint job ... that it makes me mad. Because we KNOW SS won't be able replicate anything close to that on a production level. This kind of bait-and-switch is maddening but it's nothing new. They've been hiring the best painters to do their protos for years and the product never matches.

It's even more frustrating because this is a character that 1000% DESERVES the best treatment and he won't get it. Yet again.

Still, I've got him pre-ordered, because I'm an eternal optimist ...

But I also don't expect it to look at all like the proto, because I'm an eternal pessimist.

Agreed, I wouldn't expect the paint to the be this good... hopefully the sculpt itself will be as good, though.

I'm actually more bothered by the "exclusive". Considering all of the interesting things they can do with Indy, the exclusives are the 3 shankara stones, that don't light up? This is probably the first time where I wasn't compelled to order through SSC for the exclusive.

Yea the paint wont be Lalla level, but the sculpt is pure Ford. Prolly the the best mass production one. Blows away HT efforts.

Just have to see what ships. :lol

Now fix da hat.....

Agreed, makes it really easy to wait for in-hand pics of the sculpt. Only really collect Star Wars but I'm pretty tempted by this, and TOD is probably my least favorite Indy flick.

Completely agree that the 'exclusive' is one of the lamest ever. Surely either including a jacket and/or alternate 'clean' headsculpt would have enticed more pre-orders.

I think it looks excellent on both scores, but like everyone has said, let's see how the production piece turns out.

Remember kids, Sideshow always teases you with the beautifully hand-painted artisan prototype and the reality is the shocking in-hand production piece that ends up looking something like this:

That is what I am afraid of. SSC is an old hand at this. I remember a SDCC years ago where they showed ROTS Obi-Wan figure. The paint was stellar. Looked like McGregor. One of the head SSC guys even said that it was production. Not. What we got looked nothing like the figure on display at SDCC. I am cautiously waiting for actual in hand production pieces. I have been enticed and burned too many times by SSC. Not paying a NRD for their bait and switch tactics either.

Drake was a production error and not really representative of the whole....though Sideshow probably deserve even more criticsm for simply shipping out what is essentially faulty product. That's just disgusting behaviour on their part.

Hoth Han and Hoth Luke are probably better comparisons... I can reluctantly live with that quality since we don't have other Indy options...

People keep bringing the Drake sculpt to prove a point. After that sculpt sideshow has put out a couple of descent pieces like the star wars figures, I actually think plissken was not bad at all. Superman was kind of morphed but after a hot water bath it was fixable.

I have two Drake sculpts, one on the original figure and one I used for a U2 bash. I think SS must have upped their QC after the first batch, as I don't have any major issues with it (pinkeye aside).

I thought the proto paint job was awful and made the sculpt look absolutely nothing like Nate in the game. But I guess I'm in the minority on this one.

Well now that you mention it, Hoth Luke and Han and Superman all suffer from dark tan ethnic skin tone. Plissken was alright but certainly nowhere near the quality of of $200+ Hot Toy figure.

Yeah just poor your 200$+ figure in hor water. Not bad for paint at all.

I think its from one of the many special editions. Luke and Han had to blend in with the native Hoth eskimos when they went undercover.

I don't have Hoth Luke or Han, but Superman's skin isn't all that dark. He's not pale, has a little bit of a tan. But he still looks like a white guy, if that's what you're worried about...

Indy would be fine with a bit of a tan, the best Hoth Luke in terms of skin tone was the exclusive (but it's possible they were going for sickly pale), but the rest of the Hoth sculpts are a bit too dark. Under dioder lights the Hoth figures look fine to me, though. In natural light they seem pretty tan. Juan Solo is what Han gets called. Will be very curious to see how this figure and X-Wing Luke end up, given that they're ditching the eye system.

Supes looks Hispanic to me. On the plus side at least TOD Indy will be very tan! :lol

I actually have no real idea what Nathan Drake is supposed to look like (or really who he is other than he's from the Uncharted vidgame,) but those Drakes in the pics above look pretty damn good!

And yeah, both Luke and Han Hoth have skin that's a shade too dark. They were both well and truly worth $200 though - they (especially Luke) were the best value-for-money figures Sideshow has released in years. Luke came with THREE heads and lot of accessories. I've gotten four figures from those two purchases.

I do wish this Indy came with two headsculpts - "just in case." The non-hatted sculpt that came with Han Hoth was the hit of that release - I don't really like the hatted Han head very much at all, but the unhatted head is stellar.

That "proto" was painted by Lalla Wan Lee. Which has to be the most bizarre thing SS have done releasing pictures of an upcoming sculpt.
They are already knee high in **** because of the difference between what they show and what they release, then they decide to get a Lalla paint-up?!!

To anyone not in the know, Lalla paint is known for creating incredible little masterpieces that are completely incomparable to ANY mass produced heads.
Super expensive commissions and one offs only. If anyone thinks they are getting that they are gonna be truly disappointed.

I wasnt aware of this. Theres no way in hell were going to get a custom paint job like this. His Musashi is incredible!!!!
