Yeah, the clock has a seam and the details aren't as sharp. No electronics of course or "unnecessary" goodies. But it's closer to scale and just to stand there, I like it. Then again, I'm willing to do a little work to it to get it to my liking.

Finally picked up R2. A little disappointed, mainly with the poor paint apps.

Loose panel doors mean when he leans forward, a couple open up.

And he's missing something on his leg I'll have to report...

Didn't realise the Medi was so much smaller (Hasbro in the middle). The Sideshow R2 has the size, "touch" switch, lightsaber (can that hatch stay open?), and Leia hologram going for it, while the Medi does look tidier and has sounds. The sounds alone make him way cooler.

Now, I'm short a protocol droid...

My main gripe with the SS version is that the middle leg don't sit how it should. Something even hasbro got right.

It sits well if you don't pull it out all the way. That way you also get a recessed cavity visible in R2's underside.

I think its a great figure overall. The only things I would change/improve are:

Bigger resistors for all LEDs except the projector. They are way too bright!
Spend an addition $0.50 and put magnets inside each compartment to keep the doors shut.
Tighter "ankle" joints or better yet ratcheting joints all around so he stands up straight on two legs without fear of him toppling over.

Hopefully in a couple years when they release the inevitable v2.0 we'll get this.. oh and rockets too! :rock

I'm still holding out for a discount at a local website. They don't seem to be selling many, if their stock is correct they've sold 1 or 2 in the past 2 months, still have 10+ left. Not a supermust for me but might pick it up.

By-passing the capacitive touch switch on Sideshow's R2-D2 Deluxe - this will make the figure's lights "Always-ON" but will also make it impossible to toggle the projector using the touch switch.

The projector can be by-passed to ON with another wire mod and the red/blue flashing LED can also be changed (red or blue and/or no flashing) by playing with the wires on the board.

It's a gamble, as I'm sure that when C-3PO is released in late October, there's going to be a spike in R2 interest.

I like mine a lot, he has great shelf presence. He also comes with lots of extra stuff for different scenarios. I actually thought he was too big when I first opened him so interesting to see that he is slightly under scale. He never seemed this big to me in my memories of different scenes.

Sure, Sideshow designed it so that it could be over-extended where they should have instead included a stop and lock at least 3/8" into the body. For posing purposes, don't extend the leg all the way out and you have a reasonably accurate R2 unit.
