Looking at it, I'm not sure if its the sculpt that is off, or if its the hair framing his face that is throwing things off.

Of every licensed Jack Sparrow portrait I've seen, I'd actually say NECA's At World's End figure is the best of the more of neutral sculpts. I'd say HT's Cannibal portrait is the best, but it's so expressive.

The likeness on the CM is far from a great likeness. Some if the initial proto pictures looked promising but production has not lived up to that promise.

The CM is a great likeness - but I do think that SSC have also captured Depp.

I admit I've only once seen this baby in the flesh, and he did look more than a little 'moon faced'... like he had a moooooon face!

The haters will never believe...

Here, at this angle he looks better, but he also looks kind of dead and zombiefied... I'm not convinced myself.

I think CM got his nose, eyes and mouth, it's the overall shape and structure of his face that really looks off.

I think the CM sculpt is pretty good. I think Sideshow's may be slightly better, at the very least they are equal. However given the price difference I'd take SS over CM any day.

This is the same angle the 'non-haters' always break out whenever they want to show how good the CM looks. I had to struggle to find any head-on shots, because no one wants to show how bad it looks from dead-on center.

I like the CM, but I don't like how some think because they spend a ton of money on a piece, that somehow the likeness is FAAAAAR superior. I think it's been said many times how much better the action figure looks than the vaunted CM. And I own quite a few CMs. The good ones anyway.

exactly. i've said that forever. if you drew a circle around Depp's eyes,nose, mouth, that same area on the CM looks good. the bone structure of his face is off. cheeks, jaw, chin

This was said by an administrator in the Ask Sideshow forum. The thread was becoming a criticism of Jack Sparrow PF and although I agree with the administrator that it was the wrong place to be discussing that, I resent the fact that if we criticize a piece and we are called haters.....

We do not hate this piece by any means and we are simply giving constructive criticism to the likeness, although almost all of us said we like this piece a lot. I just don't think that is appropriate to use the term "Hater" so loosely just because we are commenting on something.

Anyway, I agree that the thread had to be closed because it started to become something it was not meant for, but please do not compare us to those who don't like anything and complain just about any piece that Sideshow comes up with.

comparing SSC's Bruce Lee PF vs CM's Bruce Lee, you can't compare the two because SSC's Bruce Lee looked more like Typical Asian Guy PF, while CM's had a closer resemblance to Bruce Lee.

In the case of Cap'n Jack Sparrow, anyone can always say:
-the likeness is off
-SSC looks better
-CM looks better

it boils down to a matter of opinion, and until Johnny Depp himself makes an opinion, none of it really matters except to your own self.

but when you put it in perspective, unless you truly take the actor that the collectible is modeled after, and scale them down, you will truly never have an exact likeness. Even in photoshop/paint applications, when you scale down from full size, details will be off, etc.

CM is 1/3 scale vs the 1/4 PF scale and used real hair and a more realistic skin material, so the color -might- help make it seem better.

But you'd almost also have to consider that using painted application, a PF will always never truly be dead-on because of how the light might hit the side of the face, etc.

As it is, you also have to consider the price differential and how 'close enough' the item really is. 1750 versus 300-400 also subliminally influences that perspective.

All in all, i can't afford a CM Jack. If I could, I'd get both of them.
But i'm darn happy to get an SSC PF Jack.
