Criticism of a piece is healthy for the hobby, in my opinion. Companies show off prototypes and on numerous occassions, they use our feedback to make proper adjustments. Sideshow has done it before.

Plus, that's what forums like this one are mostly about. People sharing their opinions, be they positive or negative, about a piece. True, I think that this headsculpt is pretty sharp looking, but that doesn't mean that we have to blow off other's opinions with tired old, "...well, if you don't like it, don't buy it..." line. It's weak and insulting to fellow Freaks.

My post was made with tongue firmly in cheek, hence the laughies, the coolies and the smilies.

Right but there are some nitpicks that people just need to get the hell over already. I mean seriously the costume doesn't zig zag enough or he doesn't have enough flab as Pix put it. Sometimes the comlpaints can go a touch too far/silly.

Once again I think it really is captures his essence very nicely, just not perfect. Pointing it out doesn't mean I hate the sculpt by any means. But man if you can't discuss the differences between the sculpt and real thing what else are we supposed to be doing on a discussion board for toy's....

I think Oluf's work is excellent....

I also really appreciate Wor-Gar's high-contrast exercise with the preview photo giving us a better look at the red robes as well as a more significant peek at Sidious.

Now it's time for my hoary cliche' regarding previews and their photos.....

Don't forget, these figures always look much better "in person" (right in front of you) than any photo....

I'm sure this set is going to blow us away with how amazing it looks....

I see a lot of Palpatine in the sculpt but your right certain things are a bit off. For example he looks too well toned when in fact in EPIII he was quite flabby around the neck area, cheek, etc...The paint job is too tanned and your right about the eyebrow color as well. But he definitely looks more fit and a bit younger in the sculpt.

Thanks for showing the pic. And just for the record, I haven't come on these boards to nitpick on any previous sculpt prior to getting it. I felt all the previous ones looked close enough or if it wasn't, it didn't bother me.

Palpatine though... is... yah. Sorry if my glasses aren't rosy for this one. I'll still order in hopes that the production piece is improved but even as a prototype, I'm disappointed.

And yah, an older guy IS more difficult to pull off because the skin should look looser, tone should be much paler, and every detail in the face needs to feel like gravity is pulling it downward. This sculpt wouldn't even pass for an Episode 1 Palpatine.

I can't sculpt worth crap so I'm not even going to try. But Palpatine is such a great character that I have to pick it up. It'll look good, no doubts with that. I just want it to look far better than some of you are saying it is. This isn't a $20 Hasbro toy. This is an expensive collectible. All I ask is that they get the eyebrows and skintones right. Is that too much to ask?

The Palps HS is just about dead on. I understand the paint apps picadillos but c'mon man, get real. It doesn't get any better than this.

Wait till Oluf posts his unpainted Sculpts and you'll see what I mean.

I all ready know, no matter how good the paint apps are, mine is going to Florida or Georgia for a repaint. :rock

Yeah, I have to say this is the best looking figure I've seen since . . . aw gee I can't even think. It's as good as Obi-Wan, I'll say that right now. Just absolutely incredible. One of the best, if not the best so far.

You summed up my thoughts on criticism to the letter!!!

As for my critique of the incorrect pattern on the robes, I brought it up because it immediately stood out when I saw the preview pic. It took some looking to ID that discrepency, but its presence made the outfit look "off" to me the moment I saw it. So, hopefully Sideshow sees the error and fixes it.

If they don't...oh well. I still took the afternoon off next Thursday because I am a HUGE Palpatine/Sidious fan (more Palpatine than Sidious though) and will get it. The face does look off because of the heavy paint, but it is still a very good likeness.

And, like Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford, I always had a sneaking suspicion that McDiarmid would be a hard one to nail exactly. And that Oluf's sculpt isn't quite there proves that theory to me because his Maul and Qui-Gon sculpts are 100% dead-on to me.

Here's a quick photoshop, skin and hair made lighter, side of hair reduced, "flap" over eyes turned at a different angle. That's it. I still think this is a good sculpt.

Just my two cents.

Yeah, that does look closer to Ian, but I like the intensity of the eyes in the actual product. So...just get the apppropriate pale skin tone, and SSC will have nailed this one, I believe.
