If I remember right, that was never how Lucas wanted Jabba to look. He was a simple stand in in case they figured out how to make him look and work the way Lucas wanted him to. More like the Jabba we saw in ROTJ..

Probably right.. not only is this dude too short, how this concept would never work in Jabba’s palace

I think Lucas told a big fat lie on that score....

The technology to edit out a person an put in a creature was not really in place at the time...

Unless the planned to reshoot the whole scene....which I doubt

They weren't going to edit him out -- they were planning to lay "Jabba" over him; superimpose. But Lucas shot the scene so they'd have it if it didn't work. However, Lucas smartly just dumped the whole scene. He was smart back then. Gave the dialogue to Greedo instead.

He dumped the entire Dianoga sequence too with the animatronic dianoga rising out of the water to attack the heroes because he said it "looked like a giant turd". I always wanted to see that but I don't think they even shot it because the creature looked so bad. The man started from a good place.

I'm sure that's one of the reasons he scrubbed it. But look, he might have had ideas for revolutionizing "superimposing". Look what he did with models and everything else back then. He was on a roll. But he couldn't solve the Jabba scene.

Even in 1997, he couldn't solve the Jabba scene.

Because TLJ did so bad in China, Solo is being renamed by Disney for the Chinese market. It won't even have Star Wars in the title. A fan site said according to a local Chinese media Mtime, the official Chinese title of Solo: A Star Wars Story is now gonna be simply "Ranger Solo"...

... Why bother. There were articles in the Chinese media how they felt insulted by TLJ. I'm surprised China is even choosing to play this after TLJ since they only let so many foreign movies be played in their cinema's. Disney is probably paying them, or letting them keep like 80% of the BO gross...

I'm still trying to be optimistic and hope I will like this after TLJ was such a big let down for me. But I'm not holding my breathe.

Also another hint at perhaps a Solo trailer to be aired during the Super Bowl next Sunday? There's not much other reasoning as to tying SW to Super Bowl LII.

Feels odd to not be even a little excited for a Star Wars movie. I will see this obviously but I think I had more interest in seeing Justice League and I knew going in that would be a disaster.
Solo is just the worst idea for a stand alone movie. We got everything we needed for the character of Han Solo over the course of 4 films (especially SW and Empire, he had a perfect character arc). I really do not need to see him do the Kessel Run, meet Lando, save Chewie, get the Falcon...etc. And Ron Howard directing this does nothing either.
I hope to be surprised. Not expecting to be but low expectations cannot hurt.

Don’t you wish you could skip it and know nothing about it, as if it didn’t exist? I would love to be able to do this.

I really do. I wish I had the self control to just ignore it, but it's Star Wars..and Han Solo, one of my favorite characters of all time. If it is truly terrible, it will be easy at least to classify as fan fiction because it's not Harrison Ford playing the role.
