I see your point, but I do think that the intention was probably to have Han get to the point he is at when we first see him in the original Star Wars film through a few of these prequel movies. He's basically a good guy right now, but I'd bet that Qi'ra really betraying and selling him out like Beckett did and the work he ends up doing for Jabba might push him a lot farther from where he is at the end of this film to a more cynical and selfish version of the character that could, in turn, find the heroic, good guy he truly is when he comes in to help Luke at the last minute during the trench run. Unfortunately, since this movie isn't doing very well at the box office, we probably won't see any sequels to Solo.
At least it doesn't "need" a sequel per se though I also would definitely be on board for more (preferably with Kasdan and Howard returning.) Toward the end of the film I was getting a little worried that we were going to have an entire young Han Solo movie that ended with Lando still owning the Falcon, lol.
I wonder how this movie would have played had Michael K. Williams not had to lose his role to Bettany on account of the directors being replaced. Williams described his character as an alien that was "half man, half mountain lion." Sounds weird but I'd be very curious to see his scenes from the Lord/Miller footage regardless.

im not even joking or memeing right now but grace did release the best analysis review on this weekend box office I KNOW, I know everyone here thinks she looks like a bloated zombie but her analysis is spot on
she makes really really good points on the future of the franchise and Kennedys possible replacement
i wish more people heard what she said. this is a serious video on the suture of Kennedy and star wars

That's true. It was done in a way that it didn't need a sequel if it didn't end up doing well as it hit almost all of the character beats for Solo. I would have loved to see Ehrenreich Solo working for Jabba, though. The Jabba's palace stuff is some of my favorite material from the original trilogy, so it'd be fun to go back there. Plus, if the cameo at the end of the film is just left hanging without resolution, it'll be a little bit weird.

I actually watched that video today before you posted it. I like her. She's pretty insightful and her unusual speech pattern makes me chuckle.

the video you posted was actually pretty amazing. he comes from a NON political point and he said what many people have said here. I wonder if he even visits this place.
I really loved that he made that vid even though his channel is not political or movie reviews. i wish it had more views because he's so right. he can see the problems in star wars from a non superfan or non political view.
how much you wanna bet hes gonna get called a hater..... ugh
Also having just watched ESB again after seeing Solo yesterday man Lando's betrayal plays much more harshly now. You really empathize with how furious Han is that Lando turned him over to Vader to be imprisoned and tortured when thinking about the two of them fighting side by side in Kessel and spilling blood together.
Really? He destroyed his ship, making Lando so pissed that he leaves immediately. Then Han takes it from him in a game of cards. Definitely hope there’s more to their friendship than those two moments of theirs. Lando was also promised cash, no? Did he get anything out of the deal?
EDIT: And Han’s mission got Lando’s girlfriend L3 killed, who he also lost to Han when he became part of the Falcon.
I think possibly the thing that I like most about this movie apart from the likable characters and absolutely thrilling action sequences is the fact that it took all of those "unofficial" story notes and references to Solo's past with him briefly joining the Empire, being from Corellia, rescuing Chewie, etc., and it made them all canon in a live-action film. No takes backsies now, it's all official.
I can't even begin to describe the horror I felt when I saw how close George was to retconning Han's origin and having him be raised by Wookiees on Kashyyyk where he then helps Yoda fight the Separatists as a 10 year old boy in ROTS.

Yeah I had it on my wish list to see an updated practical Jabba in this movie and possibly Fett having his own "RO Vader" badass moment. Now that I've seen it I'm glad that they didn't cram in *every* single thing that we know about Han's past and I'm fine with Jabba and Fett being saved for the OT (aside from whatever Mangold does.) Regarding the cameo I've wondered about that and have decided that the character they chose to join with Qi'ra is as good as any. I like that Han let her go and that the movie doesn't end with him repeating the "I'll find you!" that he exclaimed at the beginning. So if she has to go off with another bad guy then they would either need to use someone like Jabba or Fett (which would then make those acquaintances yet more characters he met in his pursuit of Qi'ra,) someone brand new (which might have made for an interesting tease but then would kind of demand a sequel so that we as the audience could learn about who she joined) or
Maul who I now think works because it was a recognizable character but still TOTALLY unexpected and if there never is a sequel at least fans of the cartoons can relax knowing that they've already seen where resurrected Maul's journey ultimately ends.

Lando didn't leave because he was mad about the ship. He said he was going to wait for his share and then left Han high and dry only when Enfrys Nest's team showed up. I'm guessing that maneuver (leaving your business partners to DIE, lol) probably forfeit said partners any willingness to pay him his 20%, especially since Lando bailing on them caused them to lose their precious croaxium. But to answer your question yes, Han and Lando would have still had more of a backstory together in the 10 years between then and ANH. ROTJ implies that whatever "the Battle of Tanaab" was was something that both Han and Lando participated in together since Han apparently told Rebel High Command about Lando's sweet maneuver.

Production: might be one of the best aspects. The worlds presented , especially Hans homeworld , gave a good glimpse into WHY a rebellion started. The poor outlaying areas clearly are not subjected to the wealth enjoyed by the inner planets. Child slavery , famine, travel restrictions, and rampant corruption.
Acting: I honesty don’t know why people feel he was a bad Solo. He’s NOT suppose to be the Han you know YET. He’s a kid basically in this film, and he’s naive and trusting....the entire point of the last scene was to show he was already beginning to lose that adventurous character, in favor of the cynical tone Beckett was preaching. I do think we will get more Solo films, and we will see that slide even further. Which should make Han’s turnaround in ANH even more emotionally impactful.
Lando came out fine as well. His swagger and demeanor was a bit op polished for such a young Lando....
Emilia Clark was the weak link. As many have said , she’s really just not a good actress....
PLOT: fairly straight forward boy joins the thief guild to save his girlfriend ...meets new guys along the way , and tries to do the right thing. But as I posted earlier , Disney has to be careful about getting to complex, the average movie goer really doesn’t know much about SW....especially these days. Most of my young staff have never even seen the OT or PT.
The L3 pansexual panic was over blown as usual. One scene , and it was a joke to boot....the exaggerated outrage is a norm these days though....L3 should have been a human thou, because the emotional weight of her death for Lando felt overdone.
They should have switched Beckets gal with L3 in the beginning.
The pacing was crappy, and the roller coaster ride turns into Merry go round by the end....
Overall , I liked the story and can accept the differences in Han’s and Chewies origin story.
Final Thoughts: Movie will never take us away as they did when we were kids. I realized that a LONG time ago. A lot of fans might want to relax a bit and enjoy the ride. Expecting some cosmic event from a film after your a grown up is just not realistic.
I would liked to have seen Han as even younger on the streets of Corollia.
The escape from the Train heist was probably my favorite part. Seeing the falcon make the Kessel Run was a great thrill ride.
Being a fan of Rebels and The Clone War animated series, I was not bothered by
Maul.
I think it’s an interesting angle, although lighting his saber seemed a bit much, but I am sure they wanted to remind the average movie goer who he was... I can accept he survived ....space wizards can do a lot more....like be ghosts after they are dead.
Enjoyed most
The heist and escape.
The interaction between Han and Chewie , especially on the Falcon.
The gambling scenes
The score, which was stalled (especially hearing the Asteriod Chase from ESB for a few notes.
The Bad
L3 was obnoxious. And that arc falls flat.
End fight uninspired.
Pacing was off...not horrible , but felt off.
Glad to have great Sci-fi films to go see....a lot of you are too young to remember the LONG drought periods in film where sci-fi and fantasy were niche and you one got a few films every few years. And a lot of those were terrible.
Glad I am getting to see more of the universe of SW, and I hope we keep seeing more...someday they will stop and it will likely be decades before we get any others.

Han telling the Rebels about Lando's maneuver at the Battle of Taanab occurred after he came out of carbonite but that battle itself was presumably back when Han and Lando were allies before either joined the Rebellion.
Which actually gives a new subtext to Han's reaction to 3PO getting blasted on Cloud City. Like "what the **** man, I thought we were past this..." lol

Han should have said “Droid trouble?” after Lando came back with L3’s innards.
Yeah, I guess I never read that Tanaab scene the same way, just rewatched it and Han says “Don’t look at me” so it seemed as if it was something recent but the timeline is pretty confusing here since Han is just back into the fold and why would he have been talking about Lando to the Rebellion before ESB.
