SOLO is the only SW movie that actually shows the “Steering wheel” of the Falcon. In a way seeing the wheel take the “magic” out of the Falcon. In the past and in TLJ the coolness of the Falcon was seeing Han, Lando & Chewie punching a few buttons, pulling a few leavers and then watching the Falcon make these fantastic manoeuvres. Never did we see anyone “drive” the Falcon before. Anyone else notice this?

You see the Falcon's steering wheel/handlebars in ESB as well.

Hmmm.....thanks for the visuals. Maybe its in the action shots with the Falcon flying around and its Chewie and Han in the cockpit. I just never recalled Han/Chewie in the OT steering the ship.

No I totally hear you. As a kid I was always fascinated by how Han managed to outmaneuver TIE Fighters by flipping some switches and moving a couple levers that could only go up or down, lol. But when I finally noticed the handlebars at the end of ESB however long ago I went back and watched the scenes where he's evading the Star Destroyers and asteroids again and there are a couple shots ("yeah that'll do nicely") where you do see his hands resting on them with just the very end of one handlebar in frame but only if you know what to look for.

Certainly nothing like what we see in Solo with young Han reefing on them as he maneuvers through the Kessel Run.

It's funny, I used to have the same impression about driving the Falcon as you, Bo. I liked the idea that "steering" was done by pushing buttons or pulling levers that shut exhaust ports or manually turned some flaps or turned on/off certain motors. It added to the MF being an "alien" ship with unconventional controls, and also to its cobbled together nature.

But later on in my life seeing set photos or models of the cockpit, I saw the steering yoke and thought, "ah well, so much for that theory!"

I have another good reason to revisit the OT now. I guess the yoke so suttle in the OT that it was one of those things I never questioned or asked. When “SOLO” came out it was made was made prominent that I could not recall seeing in the OT.

I wanna go back and watch TFA & TLJ to see if the steering is visible too. Thanks guys!!

I still hold out hope that we will see this cast in another Star Wars movie. I really liked them and it is such a fun movie to watch. I always liked this universe even though some stories aren't always what we expect.

I agree. I really liked the movie and I think most people were pleasantly surprised when they finally got around to see it. Just stay on budget by *keeping* whoever the director will be (go ahead and bring back Ron Howard), and you'll actually make money!

I really hope we get to see some further adventures of young Solo, Chewie, Lando and Qira!

Yeah, this is just a great little adventure film that really holds up well with repeat viewings.

I just realized how close the first speeder chase on Corellia matches the Kessel Run. I mean it was always obvious that both chases end with Han turning his vehicle sideways to fit through a small opening but there are other similarities as well. When they cut to the dashboard of Han's speeder you see that it has similar steering controls and vertical levers as the Falcon. Also in both chases he veers off the "main path," causes an Imperial who comes up along side him to crash, etc. Cool parallels.

Fun fact: Lucas was on set with his buddy Ron Howard the day they filmed Han and Qi'ra in the Falcon's "cape room" and Howard had Alden taking the cape from Emilia's hand and hanging it up for her before kissing her. George said "Why is he helping her hang Lando's cape, Han would just throw it on the ground," which immediately prompted Howard to say "you're totally right!" and he changed the scene on the spot. So I like that the onscreen behavior of this Han does reflect input from George himself, however small.

George was right in that Solo doesn't have that respect for Lando's belongings. Part of his overall ego. Han was never overly smart just brazen and egotistical. I liked that he was brave and loyal and skilled at flying but had to bull his way past everything else. We need more of this series because they got so much right.

I've long held a little nitpick about this scene - if you watch it in motion it's clear that Carrie has no idea what she's doing at those controls and doesn't act in any way convincingly considering the Falcon is flying right up to the Executor while being pursued by TIEs. She's ''flying casual'' you could say. She also barely acknowledges Luke when he enters the cockpit, just an incidental ''oh there's Mark'' kinda look which doesn't jibe with the way she left him in the med-bay.

Im happy that they did not cram Jabba or Fett into this movie for fan service. Hopefully their absents leaves room for future instalments. There is still stories to tell like dropping Jabba’s shipment

In carries defense she might have been coked up. Your right though after the med bay scene she is going through the motions. Maybe thinking about Han.

Actually I think her apparent cluelessness at the controls syncs up *exactly* with what we see the Falcon doing because who in their right mind would have all of open space before them yet deliberately aim their ship directly at that massive Star Destroyer that's pursuing them, lol.

I'm almost surprised that George didn't add an extra line of dialogue from Piett in the ESB:SE so that he says "They'll be in range of our tractor beam in moments, lord, apparently they're actively trying to get caught."

As for Leia not really reacting to Luke's appearance in the cockpit, that one I do see as being consistent with her character under dire circumstances. Like when she was stone-faced and refused to acknowledge 3PO's concern on Yavin when Luke announced that he'd lost R2.

They really did.

Yeah, I also like that if you watch Solo and then the theatrical OT that the reveals of both Fett and Jabba are unspoiled.

On another note this was a pretty interesting video that I stumbled upon:

https://abcnews.go.com/US/mystery-millennium-falcon-debate-landing-gear-led-entire/story?id=58589123

Basically they decided that since the Falcon has three landing gears in ANH and five in ESB that the Falcon in Solo would start out with the full five but then we see the front two get broken off when he skids the iceberg during the Kessel Run. The implication being that the Falcon was always supposed to have five landing gears but that Han could never afford to replace the two missing ones until after he got his reward on Yavin.

:lol Yeah that never exactly made sense.

Remember in X-Wing Alliance the way there would be hyperspace buoys you would have to fly towards to finish the mission and the way Star Destroyers had a habit of appearing between you and buoy? I'm pretty sure that's not a thing in the films but I used to love that about the game. You had no choice but to get up close to an ISD, which I wanted to do in the interests of faithfulness to the movies :lol Also I was amazed by the graphics at the time.

Did any EU books go into detail about her feelings after the destruction of Alderaan? ANH didn't exactly depict much in the way of grief - I'm wondering if that was ever acknowledged by EU authors.

:lol Yeah that never exactly made sense.

Maybe she was getting ready to perform the Holdo maneuver in order to take Vader out once and for all but they couldn't get the hyperdrive working in time causing her to veer off at the last second! :horror :panic:

Johnson was right! JOHNSON WAS RIGHT!!! :panic: :panic:

lol

I totally forgot about that but yes you're right I always made every effort to skim past Star Destroyers for no other reason than that's what they always did in the films. :lol

I loved that game. I was always annoyed that any Star Wars space combat game thereafter was always a straightforward button-bashing shoot'em up.
