SPECTRE - Bond 24

I have to ask... I have seen a few people mention that Moneypenny was not involved much... Everyone is aware that she got more to do in this film then all the other Bond films combined right... She is a secretary. I know the Skyfall makes her originally a field agent but I thought she was just fine in this film.

Truth of the matter is the newer Bond films give all the side characters way more to do then they got to in the original films.

Anyways Great Bond movie I look forward to it on Blu ray and hope that Craig does it for the money and comes back for one more. Probably my fav film of the year so far.

Yep, the old movies have Moneypenny and M only in the office scene in the beginning where Bond gets his assignment. Q has his scene in the lab where you get to see the neat stuff he's working on, and that's about it. Desmond Llewelyn said he got more screen time in Licence to Kill than he did in all his other Bond movies combined. He actually wasn't far off. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. I mean, I guess this one had things going on plotwise that it was necessary to cut away from Bond to take care of, but I think it might also be a consequence of having bigger name actors in the parts. The originals were all character actors or bit players. The Bond series made them famous, not the other way around. Things always have a way of changing, I guess.

I still cannot believe that people downright hate this movie. I do think the plot could have been smoother but I didn't think it was a mess per se', just a bit lazy and maybe even paper thin. From an actual plot standpoint, I don't think any of the Craig films have been nearly as smart as "Casino Royale", and this coming from a SF fan above all else.

But the look and atmosphere of this movie. I just love the way they've come to shoot these movies, the eye candy, the beautiful set pieces and location, the exotic cars and worlds, all of Craig's awesome suits and gear (the best dressed Bond ever imo but I do like the modern cut), I thoroughly enjoyed the action sequences (the train fight, the car chase, Bond breaking out of Blofield's laboratory. I LOVED the first 10 minutes of this movie with the Day of the Dead. The look and color of it all matched up with the hypnotic Mexican melody with the hint of 007 music thrown in there as Bond is on the roofs above the parade hunting down his target (beautifully shot segment).

Yes, I had hoped Waltz was in it more. Yes, the Bond girl was underwhelming and definitely felt rushed. The ending could have been less teenage love story-ish and overall I think the ending needed a more personal confrontation between Bond and Blofield at the end with Bond using his wits to beat Blofield. But for some critics to say the worst Bond film in thirty years I don't have a damn clue on how they reached that result. I still like Silva as the best Bond villain of the Craig era though.

I still am not a fan of this Moneypenny...her facial expressions bother me. But one thing Craig's Bond always kicks ass with are the brutal edginess he has. When Brosnan used to land after parachuting out of his car or get out of sticky situations it was kind of campy often and silly, but Craig doing some of those same things (or when he let himself be captured and bagged just so he can kick ass despite being wired-tied=totally badass) and brings a graceful ferocity to the role. It's like he can be bruising enough to run through a wall but suave enough to keep up with the world's evil master minds and be convincing walking that line.

I actually put in the top 7 Bond films

The Great

1. Casino Royale - 10 out of 10 - Perfect Bond film. Great Song, great music, great villain, great Bond girl, great Bond, great Action!!!
2. From Russia with Love - 10 out of 10 - Was my fav forever until CR. Very realistic Bond.
3. Goldeneye - 10 out 10 - Great Bond Villain. Pierce killed it in this one... Hands down best Action in any Bond film. Some of the best action period.
4. Thunderball - 9 out of 10 - More Connery greatness.
5. The Spy Who Loved Me - 9 out 10 - Moore's best.. Could be a 10 if the music was by John Barry and not disco.
6. Specter - 8 out of 10 - Might go up or down with repeat viewings.
7. Skyfall - 8 out of 10 - Best Bond Villain ever. The villain brings this film up at least by a point.


The Good

8. Dr. No - 7.5 out of 10 - Very good Bond.. Connery is still my fav.. Had my fav bond kill ("your six are up")
9. On Her Majesties Secret Service - 7.5 out of 10 - overrated and underrated. GL does a pretty good job.. the ending helps this become classic.
10. Goldfinger - 7.5 out of 10 - Considered by many to be the best.. I like it but never loved it like so many others.
11. For Your Eyes Only - 7 out of 10 - Serious Moore... Too bad he did not make more like this.
12. You Only Live Twice - 7 out of 10 - Some Campy moments but still a very good Bond film.
13. Tomorrow Never Dies - 6.5 out of 10 - Some great action moments... Awful villain. Pierce was still good... Last time unfortunately.

The Fair

14. The Man with the Golden Gun - 6 out of 10 - One of the best Bond Villains in Christopher Lee... Too bad the film was not a little better.
15. Live and Let Die - 6 out of 10 - Moore's first. he plays it pretty serious and saves the otherwise average Bond film.
16. Moonraker - 6 out of 10 - My first Bond Film. Might be why it's as high as it is.
17. Quantum of Solace - 5 out of 10 - Worst editing in a Bond film with all the quick cuts. Ruined the movie.
18. Octopussy - 5 out of 10 - Bond disguises himself as a clown... Nuff said.
19. License to Kill - 5 out of 10 - Meh... I never cared for Dalton... Young Moore or Young Connery would have made this a better film.
20. The Living Daylights - 5 out of 10 - Same as LTK... Dalton ruins the film for me.


The Bad

21. The World is Not Enough - 4 out of 10 - Bond at his most Boring. Some of the worst action scenes on any Bond film. Opening action was good though.
22. Diamonds are Forever - 3 out 10 - Everyone who blames Moore for Campy Bond needs to watch this again... Awful.
23. A View to a Kill - 2.5 out of 10 - It's been so long since I seen this I really can't recall much about it. I just know I hate it.
24. Die Another Day - 0.5 out of 10 - Good opening action, good Theme song, not bad until it goes to the ice castle but then it turns into the worst Bond film ever... Blah...

I didn't mean that it would cheapen OHMSS, but that it would seem cheap in the context of the new film, since like you said they didn't do the whole romance part of the story well. Regardless, I hope that they will go forward creating new stories rather than retreading old ground.

Oh

Well Bond has to come out of retirement for some reason so they might as well use a bit of OHMSS. Does not have to be a remake. Like I said they never really touched on the aftermath in an of the other Bond films.

You know what, I'm going to put it in the top 10, with Casino Royale in fourth place, behind the first 3 Connery films. This film is better than all of the Brosnan, Dalton, and most of the Moore films, imo. Well, at least better looking, and that's like 50% of what makes a good Bond film

I actually put in the top 7 Bond films

I think it was Esquire who reviewed it and said it and it just stuck with me. I find it to be a very fun flick. And to me Bond films have to look cool and have great Bond moments and I thought it delivered. Now as a direct follow up to skyfall I admit I had to restrain my expectations a bit before going in and I expected disappointment from casual fans after what skyfall brought to the series, but this will be a day 1 blue ray purchase from me.

I'll say Rogue Nation was probably more of a over the top fun thrill ride but I think this is a more if an immersing experience.

It's finally released here...loved it. Funny, great action set-pieces, tied up the loose ends from the previous three films, and we've got the return of a great Bond villain. Skyfall was a hard act to follow, but I think they've done a pretty good job.

More thoughts.

I just wish that Blofeld had a greater purpose than just a personal vendetta against his macho step brother.

The Snowden/NSA metaphors came off flat and unthreatening to me.

But man was the explosion of his hideout one of the most beautifully filmed explosions in cinema history.

This movie needs an Oscar for cinematography.

When Moneypenny asked Bond if he trusted her, it would've been bad ass had he said he would kill her if she betrayed him, would've given him a nice unhinged moment of not really trusting anyone like M warned him not to.

Instead he said some safe lame line of "Instinct".

It is possible that Hinx will return since they made it a point not to show his death.

As much as I enjoyed Rogue (Squadron), Bond is Bond. No other spy series from MI to Bourne could ever replace Bond for me.

That's the thing about Bond, even the bad entries in the series are celebrated.

The series has reached a level of acceptance that we embrace the bad along with the good.

We do this when we buy the box set.

I mean, who doesn't want to own the entire box set, no one!

Not even Star Wars has acheived that level, no one wants to own the PT!

But View to a Kill, DAD and Octopussy, hell yeah they're sitting on my shelf in my glorious box set!

I watched QOS again after watching this to see if I'd enjoy it more--I have a question. How the hell was Mathis a good guy again? Wasn't it confirmed that he was a traitor in CR? Even Le Chiffre confirmed Mathis was really his friend...

I watched QOS again after watching this to see if I'd enjoy it more--I have a question. How the hell was Mathis a good guy again? Wasn't it confirmed that he was a traitor in CR? Even Le Chiffre confirmed Mathis was really his friend...

After being taken in by MI6, he was cleared as having no connection to Le Chiffre (the traitor was Vesper alone). So in Quantum, he's retired and is pretty pissed at Bond for suspecting him of betrayal.

Yeah, Le Chiffre told Bond that Mathis was his friend so that he would still want to save Vesper by giving up the bank account password.
