The MCU, as a cinematic achievement, is vastly superior to anything Star Wars has been since the early 1980s. The Infinity War and Endgame double-bill defecates on the Star Wars PT and ST from on high. Really only Rogue One's third act can compete for the sheer exhilaration that those two movies delivered.

Y'know what though, I do get it. Sometimes there's just more to say about crappy movies than good ones. Same can apply in the domain of toys and collectibles.

My theatrical experiences from both IW and EG prove you are 100% correct

Everything that you say here is right on and makes perfect sense. It truly captures almost exactly what I feel about Star Wars...

:hi5:

until you get to TROS???

:lol

I am simultaneously fascinated and confused by how anything in that movie could have reinvigorated your love of Star Wars.
I can understand seeing the movie as being harmless, inoffensive, even mildly enjoyable...but the film is so lacking in substance and weight...lacks any major set pieces or ?wow? moments...I just cannot see what in that movie made such an impact on you that all of the damage that had been done since TPM in 1999 was erased?
Seriously...what in the world is the saving grace of TROS?

Ok.. I am sure I will be repeating myself for many who have been reading any of my post right along. But I will try and explain it.

Let me start with what i liked about the ST before I ever saw TROS

1. Rey. I liked Rey as a character even though I did not like her being a Mary Sue.
2. Kylo Ren. I found him to be one of most interesting characters since the OT
3. The Performances of Ford and Hamill. I have no issues with how Luke was treated in TLJ. I liked him just fine. But I get the issues.
4. Finn in TFA

Now let me say what i hated.

1. Rey being a Mary Sue
2. The Death of Han Solo
3. The made for TV feel of TFA and the lack of imagination
4. Pretty much everything that was not Luke / Rey / Kylo in TLJ

In all honesty I kind of liked TLJ after my first viewing for about 10 min... But after thinking about it I pretty much hated the nothingness that film offered. So really the only SW film I did not enjoy with my first viewing was TFA.

I was checked out after TLJ.. I just figured nobody could make a SW movie anymore. Even though I liked RO. How much would I have liked it if not for that Vader ending. I mean it was OK.. it was SW but nothing special. I stopped Watching TCW. I stopped looking at collectibles. I felt a bit empty when I watched the OT.. I was in this state of SW depression.

So I went into TROS with expectations at an all time low for a SW movie. I had never been this way for a SW film. Was I just too old. Was I just done with A Galaxy Far Far away..

Before I saw the film I herd a major spoiler.. Rey was a Palpatine... I ****ing loved it!!!!

That bit of info got me excited for the film.. For me this is all I needed to explain why she was so good with the force. I know there are many who hate it or dont like the idea that she was good with the force without much or any training but I am fine when a power comes from a Villain. For whatever reason that gives it a pass.. If she was Obi Wan or Lukes Daughter.. i still would have hated her Mary Sueness.

So I sit in the theater Kind of excited but keeping myself in check as I am sure I will still be disappointed. So what ends up leading me to love this film?

1. So the film starts with Kylo finding the Emperor. The scene is a straight up Horror movie. The sound design is brilliant. I love hearing Palps voice and for the first time in the entire series I actually find him kinda scary. I turn to my best friends and all of agree its a great scene.

2. Poe and Finn together on the Falcon and the chase. Its just good to finally see them together on an adventure. It fun watching them BAnter with Chewie and its good to see Finn confident while manning the Falcons Guns.

3. Then we see Rey training under Leia. That is great also.. Why people cant accept Leia, who was almost a full jedi herself, could not teach someone is beyond me.. Anyways So now, not only is she a Palps but she has gotten some actual training.. More training then Luke ever got. cool with that.

We then get the McGuffin plot.. Its silly but I am able to look past it because

4. The Cast is all together and they have chemistry. I enjoy watching them play off each other. I enjoy the desert chase.. Its fun, its adventurous, Its Star Wars

5. Lando!

Ok Now we get to my least fav moment. The cave scene. I hate it because of the McGuffin Knife and the snake.. I dont hate Force healing with Rey and Ben but It should have been something different then the snake. Just takes me out of the movie a bit.

6. Rey vs Kylo on the desert planet. That move she puts on his Tie Fighter. He Force lightning making her think she killed Chewie. Great stuff.. I am having fun again.

7. Babu Frik :)

8. The Rescue of Chewie. Yep its a New Hope rip off but I had a blast because our heros are all together. Its something we should have gotten before this in the other two films.

9. Rey Vs Kylo on with her on the Star Destroyer and him on the planet.

10. I forgot to mention.. Freaking Everything Kylo Ren.. Its my fav version of him!! Love all of his Solo finger pointing also :)

11. Rey finding out she is a Palps, almost taking Kylos hand and the Rescue with the Falcon.. Love that whole scene.

12. Rey and Kylo's saber moment in the Death Star. You say no major set pieces or Wow moments.. Its my third fav light Saber duel. After ESB and TPM. I love the look and the setting. I love the sound design. I love that Kylo is handling her and that she knows it. I frealing love that back flip over the wave that she does.. One of the to 10 FX shots in the entire saga IMO. I love that Kylo is about to kill her..

13. Leia calls out to Ben, Rey is flirting with the dark side when she stabs Kylo, Leia's death wakes Rey up. It was all done perfectly and gavre me goose bumps.. Thought it was all great... Rey heals Kylo and leaves.. Kylo will turn to the light for sure. Right?

14. ****ing Han Solo! yes its just a memory but its perfect. its Kylo replaying the moment that changed him more then any other choice he made. He sees his father forgive him because he knows his father loves him... He calls him Dad.. Its the first and only time he says it. All other times he calls him Han Solo. He calls him Dad. He tries to utter the words and Han gives his the "I know" Kylo throws his Saber.. Ben Solo is Born!!!!! This scene also saves one of the parts that I hated in TFA. Han's death means so much more then Harrison just getting out of his contract.. When I watch that moment now knowing how Kylo really feels about Han I find myself so much more emotionally invested now.

15. Luke is back.. That is always a win for me. Hamill is just great in this role.. Despite it not going the way we may have thought it should in this ST Hamill shows up and nails it.

16. The raising of the X-Wing.. I would say this is the first real Nostalgia scene in the Entire ST that I enjoy just for Nostalgia reasons. The Yoda theme and seeing Luke do the thing he couldnt do in ESB.. Yep its corny but I like it.

17. Ben vs The Knights of Ren. Great stuff seeing him with a Blue saber and the Han Solo gesture he gives the Knights.

18. Rey Vs the Emperor Guards.. Reys theme is used here and I love it. Its a fun scene. I wish both this and the Kylo scene went on Longer.

19. The Emperor Using his force lightning on the ships.. The freaking sound design on that is epic.

20. Lando's "On you left moment"

21. Lando :lol

22. Wedge Antillies - I find it corny now.. But I loved it the first time. I like having him there but the line delivery is corny

23. The battle overall looks great. I love the ground level view of all the ships flying overhead.

24. The "Not as fast as this ship" rescue of Finn

25. The voices of all the Jedi

26. "I am all the Jedi"

27. Rey Skywalker

I wonder if you are just experiencing what you described you were doing with your first viewings of the PT.
I don?t know you well enough to presume to know what you like but maybe it was just too painful to watch the entire Star Wars saga get debunked and exposed as being a failed storytelling enterprise so you may have convinced yourself that something is there that actually isn?t?

I have had 4 viewings now.. Along with watching some of my fav scenes several other times.. I can say this is not a case of what i had with the PT.

What TROS did was bring the joy of SW back to me. It was not burdened with the Politics of the PT, the redo of the ANH with TFA or the stupid side plots of TLJ. It was a fairly straight forward adventure that was fun.. IT WAS FUN. Fun in a way that ANH was to me. It made me feel like a kid again. My two best friends who were with me felt exactly the same way. We all loved it. They both had been feeling like I was before seeing this. They both loved everything that I did about the film.

I have heard this by more then one person.. Both fans and non fans.. Its the most Star Warsy film since Star Wars.

I guess I needed that.

Bah.. Endgame was garbage that almost ruined the entire Marvel Universe for me.. You have to hit that landing.. Even if the film had some great Hulk moments at the end I would still have to sit through the first two hours.

Having said that.. Infinity War is brilliant and deserves a more worthy follow up.

****ing time travel.

What do you say we all toss this TROS disc aside and pop in Infinity War..? and just enjoy the speedy fast ride, with wit, charm, exhilaration and tension... and a much better villain with a much more sinister goal.

What kinda disgusts me - and yet would be celebrated by some - is that this thread has over 20,000 replies while the Avengers Endgame thread has under 7000. Avengers Endgame was far more applauded by Marvel fandom than Star Wars IX was by Star Wars fandom. Why are we elevating relative mediocrity in our fantasy genre with continual non-stop discussion? Star Wars doesn't deserve this kind of attention anymore.

Because Star Wars was like magic on screen back when that sort of thing was really impressive. Plus all those Kenner figures. As great a run as the MCU films have enjoyed they will never have the mystique of Star Wars going back over 40 years now. Of course a good bit of that mystique will die with the children who experienced the craze firsthand.

JAWS I won?t quote it because it was a long one...but a good one!
Once again you captured something.
I went into TROS with VERY low expectations based upon the word on the street about its quality. I had almost forgotten that immediately as the end credits rolled I loved it.
My wife and I looked to each other and could not figure out why it was being savaged by the critics.
Your post actually reminds me of how I felt immediately after seeing the film.
Sadly by later that evening the cracks began to show and by the next day I thought it had been a terrible movie...so terrible that it is in fact the only Star Wars anything that I do not own...and I have EVERYTHING.
I did rewatch it on Disney Plus and sadly it was significantly worse to me the second time.
Your post, however, does make a very good case for why some can indeed find the movie to be enjoyable.
It was not for me...but I can now definitely appreciate why you like it.

So this came up elsewhere, but I forget: What was Palpatine's goal? I don't think I know what his master-master plan is/was? I did up until the ST... now I have no idea why he went thru everything he did.

Thanks for reading it :lol

I feel for you brother. I wish I could pass on some of that joy I have.

What you describe is me after TLJ.

I own nothing from the PT of ST :lol

So this came up elsewhere, but I forget: What was Palpatine's goal? I don't think I know what his master-master plan is/was? I did up until the ST... now I have no idea why he went thru everything he did.

:lol

He was took weak to rule and take on Skywalker so he needed snoke as a puppet to locate and kill Skywalker if possible.

Then he finds out about Rey.. All that stuff like wanting to kill her and all that was probably to make sure nobody could get in his way of ruling the Universe.

Kinda like trying to kill Padme then not trying to kill Padme.. His plan is always in motion and changing.

So by the time TROS comes around he decides to take her body and put his soul into her so he can rule the galaxy.

I am not going to pretend that is exactly 100% correct. :lol Lets face it.. There was no Emperor until TROS :lol

In reality I am always confused when it comes to Palps plans and how he gets there.. I just know he wants to rule the galaxy :lol

Is that it? Rule the galaxy? He had that. Some say he let Vader "kill" him so he could go into hiding and wait for Rey's vessel.

That's a true justifier for you. That guy makes his Star Wars work against all logic. Its his, dammit, and it will be forever.

I think ardent fans are like Palpatine -- they have to keep changing their plans, justifying new movies, to fulfill their Star Wars canon.

I think ardent fans are like Palpatine -- they have to keep changing their plans, justifying new movies, to fulfill their Star Wars canon.

The Emperor wasn't even in the ST until the knuckleheads in charge botched things so badly that they realized at some point after the conclusion of act 2 that they basically had to include him in the finale to even have an antagonistic villain(or any story arc at all for that matter).

If they explained that in the films and built up towards that then people would ease off the Mary Sue stuff but since she seems to of gotten strong out of nowhere it makes no sense.

Can anyone explain that stupid scene where she happens to know how to do a Jedi mind trick out of her ass and it works? That was the huge reveal she was a Jedi. I thought that scene was so damn stupid. How the hell she know how to do that?

Notice how no one can answer this? They choose to ignore it.

The actual answer is she believed in the force and could do it.

I believe in the Japanese language, therefore I can speak it!

Total crap.

Star Wars has a very strong core spanning twenty odd years of story from Solo through Rogue One, the OT, and The Mandalorian.

I consider anything before or after this period as excess baggage.

The OT is the period that sparked the interest, so the further things diverge from it the less interest I have. The ST is almost like a completely different franchise, like those sci-fi series and films of the 1970s and 1980s that grew out of the buzz created by Star Wars itself.

I'd much rather watch the likes of Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone than the ST or PT.

:lol

Calling the PT era baggage while praising Solo? HAHAHA.

Like I always say...

PT = more original
ST = better executed

The politicking of the PT never bothered me, as it was alluded to in the prologue of the original SW novelisation.

ST isn?t better executed unless they better executed it into turning Star Wars to ****.

ST has so many retcons and plotholes to the point they dedicated TROS to undoing TLJ.

That is not better execution.

How many movies exist that are happy accidents that come from botched productions that miraculously worked.

Add TROS to that list.

Wow, just wow.

And even though I too love Wedge's cameo I do agree that his line was corny. "Let's fly Lando?" Um what had they already been doing for however long it took them to arrive, lol. Should have just said "Let's get 'em Lando" or something.
