Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I thought Solo was your least favorite? So how do you rank them from best to worst and canon vs. non-canon?

Nope. As a film (in terms of just cinematic merit), I find Solo way better than any of the prequels. I just can't accept it (yet) in my own personal canon. Here's my breakdown of the films in my own twisted head-canon:

Tier 1:
1a) ANH (10/10)
1b) ESB (10/10)

Tier 2:
3) ROTJ (8.5 - Sentamentality adding at least half a point)
4) TLJ (8)
5 & 6) TFA & RO (7.5)

Tier 3 (or, more like "3 tears"):
7) Uhhh . . . ROTS? (5.5 . . . a 6 when I'm not paying attention; a 5 when I am)
8) AOTC . . . I guess (5.5)
9) TPM (4.5 or a 4 - But so close to being non-canon)

As an "Elseworlds" film, I give Solo about a 6.5 (not great, but not too bad). So, if I ever do finally accept it as canon, I'd probably rank Solo ahead of every prequel, but below the two ST films and RO.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

It's always fun to enjoy new SW so I definitely won't be sitting in my seat opening day of Episode IX with a scowl on my face and arms folded across my chest. I'll be taking in every new minute of the final chapter of the "Skywalker Saga" with the hope that it delivers on all levels. Then if it does win/win, maximum enjoyment. If it goes full Rose Tico then and only then will I change my tune and make my opinion known for months on end to all of you fine people, lol.

Looking forward to the excitement hopefully building again with the first teaser! :rock

I just hope Rose doesn't Peg Finn again. The movie has a lot to live up to and that's the problem for any franchise to do. Everyone has an idea of where it should go. I am looking forward to watching it and hopes its good.

That one ET is giving the finger (and not the warm proctology one). I swear I can see it.

Episode IX is going to have to walk a pretty serious tight rope. I think it needs to redeem TLJ; wrap up the Skywalker Saga, which means it must address the prequels (other than by offhandedly referencing "Darth Sidious"); embrace the OT; explain Rey's parentage; explain how Luke's lightsaber came to be had by Maz; and (hopefully) give some backstory to Snoke and the Knights of Ren. That's a pretty tall order.

You've got a better chance of having JJ explain the smoke monster from Lost in Episode IX than you do of seeing any of that. :lol

Mmmmm Reys parents were explained....they may need a trusted character to confirm it, like Yoda confirming Vader as Lukes father....and thats fine. We don’t need every character to have some special linage.

Knights of Ren were also explained. followers of Kylo while he was in school....bad guys.....

Snoke also has a back story, dark side force user rose to power after the fall of the Empire.

I would agree that a Lightsaber to Maz explanation would be nice.....but I would rather not see Maz again so I can live without it.

We didnt get backstory on Boba Fett, the Emperor or any secondary characters at all except a few lines in OT....we tend to forget that after 30 years of added material.

Ben Kenobi: former general of the clone wars (what the hell is that?) Whos apprentice went to the Dark Side cause he was seduced. (whats that mean?)

Yeah, some good points there. I still think there is another shoe to drop re: Rey's parents - otherwise why wouldn't she have seen them in the force cave? Also, the Skywalker lightsaber seems to be uber-connected to her for some reason. I think we'll get something about Snoke - maybe a flashback to when he finally turned Ben Solo to the dark side. That would be all I need for Snoke.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I think Snoke is Maz Kanata’s lover and she took the lightsaber after a night of strong role play after forgetting the safe word her and Snoke, Maz went into hiding while pregnant with Rey.

Solo designs and casting were awesome. The movie was spoiled by indistinguishable locations (with similar-looking inhabitants) and the need to shoehorn in every OT reference ever made.

Oh, and L3.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I thought RO had alot more useless references than Solo...

Especially that bit at the end with the Data tapes and Bader chasing it to the Tantive....

What a waste....

“Several transmissions were beamed - er, handed - to this ship by Rebel spies. I know, I was there!”

The only OT reference missing from Solo was the bounty hunter of Ord Mantell, and that was only because it was from a different time period.

But then they confused people enough with Maul so they might as well have thrown it in!

I figured this is the best place to post this without starting a new thread. I’ve been following the development of this fan film for the past 6 months or so, and it turned out pretty decent imo. Definitely check it out. Give this guy the attention he deserves.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Empire Strikes Back wouldn't have been anywhere near as good, and anticipation for ROTJ would have been dulled significantly, if Luke Skywalker had managed to beat Darth Vader in Cloud City.

ACTUALLY.....Luke defeating Darth Vader in a one on one lightsaber duel is exactly what DID happen in the official canon follow up to Star Wars, the novel "Splinter of the Mind's Eye"....BEFORE Cloud City!!

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

:lol I didn't know that - it's certainly not canon now but wasn't it rendered non-canon by ESB itself way back in 1980?

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Yeah, it was rendered Expanded Universe as soon as ESB actually went into pre-production. I only brought it up to be a nerd.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Lol, Splinter of the Mind's Eye. That book was partly commissioned to branch the story away from Han Solo (who didn't appear in the book) since Ford hadn't signed on for any sequels yet IIRC.

In other news I've been watching my own personal prequel trilogy (TPM/Solo/RO) over the past few days and am up to RO now. This grouping really works! Of course a good chunk of TPM was outright goofy but Solo immediately cleansed that palette. Then watching Solo end with Two-Tubes standing with Enfys Nest as she declares that the Rebellion is beginning to take form and then having RO open with Two-Tubes capturing Bodhi on Jedha really gives them a nice evolutionary flow.

It's kind of cool that "Wobani," the planet where Jyn is first rescued, is a mud planet. It kind of makes it seem like the Empire just moved in and occupied mud planets throughout the galaxy (Mimban, Wobani, etc.) in order to use them as their own personal labor camps.

Another nice thing is that since Solo doesn't have a big space battle of any kind it gives a nice lull between the Naboo battle and Scarif battles, kind of like ESB separating the two DS attacks in the OT. Anyway, that's my little spiel. I love how each film in the "Khev PT" gets more serious and better quality with each new entry and a third of the way into RO the silliness of TPM feels like a distant memory instead of acting as the tone setter for the entire trilogy.
