Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I like a slow burn when it's done well. I like long, introspective movies, when they're done well.

It's like you said; we all like different stuff.

I absolutely loved "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" and I've watched it several times, and other people thought it was too boring and slow to get through even once.

I thought "Gone Girl" was a fantastically paced mystery that didn't telegraph the ending at all, of course, that had the advantage of being a novel first.

But then I remember people raving about "Manchester By the Sea" and I thought it was the most boring, dull, navel-gazing trash I'd seen in years.

But a similar movie from 2001, called "In The Bedroom" I consider a masterpiece.

I think it's funny that TLJ and BR2049 seem to be the two most divisive movies on this forum. I disliked both, but TLJ was just utter excrement without a single saving grace to me, whereas I could at least see the artistry in 2049. I just yawned my ass off at the retread, well-worn plot. I'd love to spend more time in that world, just give me a plot with more substance, please!

Frigging masterpiece right there.

I've seen nothing indicating that BR2049 is divisive. Hardly anyone here even saw it on the big screen or really even talked much about it during its release. It wasn't a film meant to cater to the lowest common denominator so it was never going to be everyone's cup of tea. I don't see how that makes it any more "divisive" than any other film with such a limited audience. Discussions are never heated and whenever anyone says they hate it those who love it just go yeah okay whatever and then the discussion ends, lol.

Not remotely comparable to the reactions to TLJ.

Well I certainly got a stern talking to in the official BR2049 thread for not liking it!!

From crows? I think I remember him getting a bit cooky in that thread but I think that was just him trying to hang with the big boys, lol.

When I think of long artistic films that are a slow burn, that I dislike and everyone seems to like only two films comes to mind....

2001
And
Citizen Kane

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

I dig 2001 but Citizen Kane is just too old to be a relatable and enjoyable experience. I've sat through it twice, just to appreciate it from a historical/importance perspective, but other than some really cool innovative shots and techniques, I didn't "like" it.

Same with "Gone With the Wind"....I'd never actually seen it, so I decided to watch it a few years ago. I finally made it through after stopping it several times. I'm sure at the time it blew people's minds right outta their heads but for me watching it today, it just plain sucked.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

1985 s Commando is still the greatest cinematic achievement of the 20th Century. It doesn't get more artistic than that film. So many layers...and the dialogue, "He's dead tired"....the guy was actually dead, not just physically, but.....internally.

"I lied."

"Ohh la laaaaaa!!!"

Speaking of long and boring, I've developed a new appreciation for ST:TMP in my geezerdom. (Especially now that both Voyager probes have finally entered interstellar space!)

I love ST- TMP- it's flaws have become so cozy with me over the years I see this as one epic sci-fi film rather than a ST film

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

After reading so much talk about BR2049, I decided to watch it again since I had it on my DVR.
I liked it a lot the first time, and this second time as well, but two things bothered me slightly.

1. How could Deckard's daughter "see" K's memories? Was it some special technique that worked on Replicants? If so, why was there an apparatus to do just that conveniently placed in her enclosure?
2. Why did K (Joe by then) think he could fool Wallace into thinking that Deckard had drowned? Wallace has all the tech at his disposal to track the three transports that were shot down, in fact, it's a bit silly to assume that a response team wasn't dispatched immediately after the first transport was downed. So that bit of Joe's plan was a bit silly, story-wise.

Still, it's a great movie, and beautifully shot.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Wasn't Deckard's daughter a memory-maker?

Yep, thats her job. She can record amd create memories....

“You don’t even have to try hard”

And Wallace didn’t think a replicant could lie. They are not suppose to, but K was way off his baseline and at that point could lie. I suspect he wouldn’t be a very good liar....as it takes practice, something he didn’t have.

Raise your hand if you think you’re a replicant.

I know she was a memory maker, the best, but that still doesn't explain how she could "see" K's "memories".

Its actually explained that the doodad shes using is what enables her to see his memories....

Now here is the interesting bit. If shes Wallaces memory maker, its very possible she implanted those memories into K ON PURPOSE, to cause the chain reaction of events to bring an outside force to bear and retrieve her father. She couldn’t search for him herself due to being sick and stuck in the bubble. So she implanted the memories in K so he would go on the journey in her stead.
