What trailer is that? I never saw that in 1980. Gives too much away. The trailer I saw back then was pretty boring. I remember I got the soundtrack before opening day and that's how AT-ATs were spoiled for me.

That was the second trailer that showed actual footage from the film, the third overall. The first teaser was just a montage of McQuarrie paintings and the second one was similar to the one above but had a cheesy narration by Harrison Ford.

I didn't see any of those. I remember lots of white corridors which looked cheap to me, and not-so-great narrator announcing that "all my favorites were back" (but it wasn't Ford).

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Yep, that's the one. And I know it's hard to believe at first but that is indeed Ford doing the goofy voice-over. They thankfully ditched the narration for the far superior trailer that followed.

I never saw that one either. I might be wizened like Khev, but never caught many trailers back in the day.

Gotta admit, it’s a tough call between “first new Star Wars ever” and “first new Star Wars in 16 years”.

But I will say the TPM teaser felt *exactly* like Star Wars to me, even if the movie itself was a disappointment.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

That's Ford? Seriously? Now that you say it I can hear Ford inflections buried beneath the silly voice.

That's the one I remember though, I guess it was the one that came out a year in advance (or at least Christmas) since they say Next Summer.

The person who cut this trailer must’ve lived on to cut the ASM2 and BvS trailers :lol

While not as spoiler filled as the other one it was always still pretty spoilery.

The trailer Khev posted can’t be surpassed.

Yeah I'm shocked that Ridley Scott ever asked him to narrate Blade Runner after that awful voice he did for the ESB trailer, lol. Though speaking of Blade Runner he did talk in that funny voice again while pretending to be the inspector questioning Zhora.

My second favorite trailer of all time is the first ALIENS teaser. I guess I have a thing for trailers that feature no dialogue whatsoever.

I remember seeing it before Top Gun and being absolutely shaken by those images coupled with the audio on the big screen. I didn't know what the exploding dropship was that was barreling toward Hicks and with that and the Queen reveal at the end I remember thinking "Holy **** how big ARE all the aliens in this movie?!?" :horror

Just that teaser alone made it full well and clear that all those soldiers were absolutely ****ed which disturbed me well before even seeing the finished film.

Oh ****, you just blew my mind. I totally hear it now. I was trying to place that Ford voice, I knew I recognized it once you said it was Ford but couldn't remember where he did that weaselly voice again.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Oh come now you're as old as I am. A wizard should know better! ;) Even with unfinished effects this is still the greatest trailer of all time. Watch this thing with the sound cranked up, I still get goosebumps regardless of how many decades have passed. What a ****ing GLORIOUS debut of Williams' Imperial March.

That trailer must have been mind blowing back then if you were a big SW fan. It shows Vader doing a lot of physical stunts and fighting. I can only imagine, since I'm not a huge SW fan, but also, I did not experience the build up and anticipation of ESB. It does remind me of TDK trailer, both dark with lots of footage that doesn't give away much, and a lot of shots of the villain.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

While cinema has had enough historical moments for all generations to experience I honestly feel bad for those that were not around for the OT.

For me the OT remains the pinnacle of cinema.

There are no proper words to describe 77/80 and yes even 83.

But 77 was a real mind being blown moment.

Jesus then the 80’s cinema can only be described as cocaine for the eyes.

I was 13 for ESB!

Yeah screw growing up with smartphones and HD video games. Nothing tops being born in the early-mid 70's and getting to experience ground zero of blockbuster cinema as a freaking kid.

(Of course I say that realizing that every generation thinks that the decade they were born in is the "best." The difference is that with regard to Gen Xer's we're actually right, lol.) ;)

:exactly: :lecture :exactly:

Look i’m the person who passionately embraces the present.

LOTR, MCU, BB, TDK are masterpieces!

I am a tech alcoholic constantly tinkering with my tv’s (TCL 6 series crowned LED tv of year beat out Samsung’s Quantum and OLED wins best picture again).

I love playing my Battlefront2 and other videogames.

I love my Ipad/Iphone.

So I am not some grumpy must hate everything modern kind of person BUT

I would not trade my OT first run viewings for any of that not LOTR or MCU that’s how special my childhood was.

Word. Though I am glad that the MCU, LOTR, RO, and so on exist for people that weren't born for the OT, my own kids included. And I'm still blown away by 1080p to say nothing for 4K, IMAX 15/70, HDR, digital 3D, etc., lol.

Getting back to Clown's post:

Yeah for a Batman/BB fan then I imagine that the TDK trailers might have given you a level of hype and excitement not too unlike the build up to ESB. Sure us older folks had STM and B89 but Nolan was definitely taking cbm's to a whole new level previously unprecedented in cinema.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - December 20, 2019

Maybe I would be a big SW fan had I been born 10 years earlier and playing with SW toys, who knows ? I grew up watching and liking Arnold and Stallone action movies, and I was more into superheroes, TMNT, and Ghostbusters than SW. I enjoyed watching the SW films on tv/video, but I couldn't connect with the heroes for some reason.

Yeah, and with the avalanche of copycat sci-fi and space opera that followed in both movies and TV, we were kids in a candy store!

And while I was "aware" of 2001, POTA and ST at the time, I never really got "into" them until SW.

Six Million Dollar Man was my favourite property until SW came along.

TDK was the Batman movie I both deserved and needed right now (back at the time). Until I decided it was too rooted in reality, by which time the Snyderverse was upon us.
