The new Vanity Fair photos are nice and all, but I find the articles associated with them even more interesting. JJ actually seems to be suggesting that he's not going to play it anywhere near as safe with TROS as he did with TFA. And to that, I can only say: THANK YOU!! :clap

I really hope that JJ was indeed more authentically creative when filming TROS, and not just emulating the OT (in both style and story). If he makes this last film actually feel like something other than a paint-by-numbers imitation (just with sharper colors), I will be surprised, impressed, and very grateful.

From one of the new VF articles:

The Last Jedi was famously divisive among fans, but Abrams says he was emboldened by the ambitious swings Johnson took with his films: “Having seen what Rian did made me approach this from a place of instinct and gut. I was making choices I knew I would not have made on VII, some story-wise, but more in terms of directing. I found myself feeling less like I’m going to try and do something that feels like it’s [only] true to the specifics of this franchise or the story.”

As far as how coordinated Episode IX was, JJ seems to suggest that it was at least somewhat of a collaborative process in coming up with the most fitting story to resolve the whole saga:

Citing meetings he’s had with The Force Awakens and original trilogy writer Lawrence Kasdan as well as Rian Johnson and George Lucas, Abrams says the ending they settled on was specifically designed to close a satisfying arc that spans not just these final three films, but the complete Skywalker trilogy. “If a kid is watching all nine movies,” Abrams says, “he or she sees this one path, this inevitability and that’s the challenge of this movie.”

And Kylo's arc, according to Adam Driver, never changed. It was, dare I say, planned from the beginning?

As much as Abrams was inspired by Johnson, there also appear to be certain character paths in place from the beginning that didn’t shift after The Last Jedi. “I knew little bits from my first meeting with J.J.,” Adam Driver says of where Kylo Ren finishes this story. “An overall arc was very, not vague, the opposite, it was very clear—[there was] an end in sight even from the very beginning. The details obviously hadn’t been worked out, but we had talked about the very thing that we’d been working towards with this last one.”

The alien burkas have definite PT vibe, as do nearly all ST creatures. RO had very OT creature designs (even though there were a few burka/Taliban aliens in that too) - not sure what it is that defines a "OT look." The PT aliens always looked a bit unconvincing to me.

And the "fatness" of the HT 3PO sculpt that was shown a couple of years ago really is accurate - it's interesting how chunky ST 3PO looks (designed for an older and heavier Daniels) vs the super slender OT 3PO.

I'm also curious how they can get away with such clearly Middle East/African costume looks without the "cultural appropriation" label coming in. It's a galaxy far far away and all that, but it's pretty obvious.

Yes, some very pretty pictures. Strangely, the most un-Star Wars picture appeals to me -- the gold-masked girl in purple on the snowy steps.

Kylo and Rey look like they're fighting on a sinking ship with stormy waves splashing.

And the Knight of Ren in the center looks a lot like Keaton Batman without ears.

Yeah, again - interesting how the design/look feels un-Star Warsy. A lot of TFA creatures/non-humans felt a bit Star Trek.

Yea , some feel Trek to me also, but at this point, how impossible is it to get OT looking aliens?

More rubber masks? I thought Maz cantina had some great SW’y designs.

Most of the PT aliens sucked, especially the pod racers.....and that announcer......ugggghhh.....thats got the Lucas seal of approval all over it.

And he'll still be laughing.

Lando will be the Salacious Crumb of TROS - they keep cutting to him for the over-the-top laugh.:lol

Not even a hint of a Rose to be seen.

They're saving the best for last.

Ah Hux..what a useless character..hope he gets axed in this once and for all

Yeah, how that dull, stupid character was a fixture in three films I'll never understand. The OT Imperial officers turned out to be sort of cool and memorbale side characters (Piett with Bossk, Veers at Vader's Meditation chamber etc.) - the ST even turned that on its head.

Is it just me or does C-3PO look a little thick in the legs in that one new vanity fair picture?

I also suspect Threepio has put on weight.

Fat shaming a droid lol

Yeah, even droids get the spare tire around the middle as they age. :lol

I guess it was the trade-off for having an older and heavier Daniels inside the suit but ST 3PO really looks quite different from OT 3PO which is unfortunate from a 1/6 figure perspective: HT managed to capture "TFAT" 3PO pretty well so he's not as usable for OT displays.

I thought he looked rather slim at Celebration, no?

:lol :lol :lol

Yeah true, but Daniels himself at the time of TFA said he'd gained enough weight that they expanded the suit a bit for TFA. Maybe he's lost some weight over the past couple of years but they didn't take the suit back in again.

It's just interesting that the slightly wider/heavier-looking torso and legs reads so clearly on the ST suit - shows how truly slender OT 3PO was.

KR is sexier.

I just think the whole get up works on her especially the form fitting push up strap giving her perky ****s not that I care about that lol

I think she is Fett’s granddaughter :rotfl
