I agree with you about the thought process. Seeing two old and one young adds a level of distraction--even if it's possible to think about a justification, it does require a level of thought in the final seconds of the saga that wasn't there before. I think original audiences just accepted a healed and restored old Anakin without thought.

Had the films been made in chronological order and young Anakin was the only version we'd ever seen, I think audiences would have been just as accepting. What's jarring about it is the fact that it's a change. It didn't used to be that way, and fans are aware of the change and are forced to decide whether it was a change for the better or worse. I think we'd be more accepting if it had been that way all along.

I think the fact that Anakin didn't vanish when he died has something to do with how he appears as a force ghost.
In any case, when I first saw the scene in ROTJ I did sort of scratch my head and wondered WTF? Why does he have hair? So I rationalized it as "the old dude with the scars was bad Skywalker, this dude with no scars and hair is good Skywalker"... Still didn't make much sense.
When I first saw the ROTJ SE scene it made sense to me, I immediately thought, Anakin is back. Didn't really have to think much more about it.

The thing is wouldn't Luke have gone "Who the Hell is that?" Especially after seeing his old father's face before he died? Even if he made the rational leap to "Oh that must be my father when he was young" then wouldn't he wonder why Obi-Wan or Yoda project the same thing? Also if Anakin projected the image he wanted wouldn't he project Shaw first to show that he was alright and then deage?

It's a plot hole either way...:lol

I was watching the extended scene of the Rebels Raid on the endor base and man i'm glad that got cut. Something about the way the stormtroopers falling on the ground after supposedly being shot looked way fake.

This is what bothers me most about the SE changes; they do tend to be jarring and almost universally I end up feeling that they were unnecessary.

The one great thing about this scene is when Han steps into frame and all you see is his hand and blaster. It's very Sergio Leone. The rest of the scene sucks.

Agreed, the appearance of Han is pretty cool.

Vs CGI Clones falling in the PT :lol

Just sit down and watch the CGI travesty of the Wookie planet battle in ROTS.

Watch that fake looking explosion when the Wookie places the explosive on the water gun ship.

Ughhhhh.

Almost all of the action scenes in AOTC & ROTS look like glorified video game cut scenes.

Hell, some of them look worse than that. Even BioWare bested the PT with their cinematic trailers for The Old Republic.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The Man with no Name. haha. I'm sure it was an influence. Star Wars is kinda a space western.

How the hell would Luke know what Anakin looked like in his twenties? Young ghost myth...BUSTED!

I always thought the force ghost is projected into the mind of the viewer. Anakin projected the image he wanted Luke to see.

Still wouldn't know what he looked like. Young force ghost suxxx.
