Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I remember knowing about the name Palpatine as a kid in school in the early 80s - before all the EU books. :huh

I did own the the ROTJ novel.. maybe it was mentioned in there..

I'm not absolutely certain, but I THINK it was mentioned in the original Star Wars novelization by Allan Dean Foster, in the opening prologue.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Going from memory the novelization of Star Wars had a prologue that mentioned Palpatine and a reference to "Journal of the Whills" which may have been authored by Leia.

Nah - the thing is.. I never read that book either. :huh :lol

Either it was also in the original ROTJ novel I had, or at one time I seem to recall Kenner including the name Palpatine on the Emperor's figure cardback - or in the name list on the back.

Hmm..

This was the first time I ever saw the name Palpatine.

I dug up my old RotJ novel and Palpatine is mentioned by name in there, its also in Shadows of the Empire but that wasn't released until around 1995.

There, I knew it - the ROTJ novel! :yess:

Yeah, we're talking about non EU references. I think the first time I also read about Obi-Wan & Vader fighting & his fall into the lava pit, was in that novel too!

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Little off topic but does anyone own or remember reading "Splinter of The Mind's Eye"? I have it still buried somewhere. It was a great Star Wars book and it was rumored to be a sequel to Star Wars for a long time back in the day before Empire came out. I remember people speculating the connection of the book to the flims. If it had been a sequel, it would have shifted the story in a much different path.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Splinter was 'plan b' in case Ford wouldn't return for a second film.

Thank goodness he did... Although it does surprise me the Kaiburr Crystal played such a big role in the original drafts of Star Wars and never made it to any of these movies. I wonder if it will play a role in the ST?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Splinter of the Mind's Eye is OK at best. It's most notworthy in that it puts the lie to any notion Lucas had it all planned out. It's pretty clear reading it that Luke and Leia were not going to be siblings until George pulled it out of his butt developing ROTJ.

Luke is flying Leia and the droids to some rebel meeting when their ship crashes on a forrest planet/imperial outpost. There's a population of grunt workers and they blend in. There's a lot of Luke and Leia becoming attracted to each other and also acknowledging they come from very different classes of society. She sticks out when surrounded by working class slobs and the local imperial officers take notice. A Force sensitive woman finds them and she possesses a piece of the Kaibarr crystal, allowing Luke to channel the Force like never before. Lots of running around in the woods and eventually Vader shows up and the sh-t hits the fan.

I've read the novel and the comic adaptation. The comic plays down the attraction between Luke and Leia since it's at odds with ROTJ.

I thought it was because it could be filmed on the cheap, in case Star Wars wasn't a huge success? I know Lucas had a dogfight scene removed, because it would be too expensive to film.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

You're correct, it was written to be cheaper too.

The head of FOX was impressed with Star Wars and wanted sequel options. Splinter was developed before SW became a moster hit. Ford wasn't a sure thing for a second film either.

Yeah, I assumed those things were tied together, needing Ford and overall cost.

Oddly enough, I've never looked into Splinter, or read it. I just know about the cost stuff from that Complete Vader book.
