I just saw it and I liked it. It's safe, repetitive, even dumb at times, and relies on nostalgia too much, but the characters are likable and it's just the beginning. There was even an Indiana Jones reference Oscar Issac looks like a hero and should get more screen time in the next film, and not just in a ship. Finn and Rey are likable, but not the types of heroes I like in a film. The Supreme Taco is a rehash of the emperor just like most of the film rehashes moments and characters from the first two films.
Kylo Ren is fascinating and has potential, but they pulled a Zod in this film by making him look weak in the end...getting beat up by untrained, unskilled fighters is not how you build up a villain for the next film. Phasma was a waste of character, even more than Boba Fett. The ending is once again repetitive and anticlimactic, but it was expected. Overall, the film is highly overrated and like I've said, years from now in retrospect, people's opinion of this film will change...especially critics who gave it a good review. It's not bad ...it's not great, just ok. Nothing special.
I loved it for what it was- it just hits every beat of a SW fan's impulses. I see it for that.
It will be controversial over time because of one key element:- it is a remake of ANH. Good idea or bad that will be the main sticking point that everyone will debate. I have no problems with the acting, effects and look and feel. Just that feeling is from ANH. Bet the next one will be much more original.
I don't understand the "it is a rehash of ANH" thing. It is a combination of all three OT films. This movie has key elements from each in its own unique way. It is very clear to see I think.
While not the disaster that were the PT, still disappointing.
I have been punched in the balls in 99 and now in 2015.
When CF's acting is one of the few positives you know we're in trouble.
First the negatives:
The way the previous 32 years was explained away, Han had a fight with Leia something or other.....wait what.
Han and Chewie's introduction wasted!
Han bumbling about as a smuggler.
Han's death by a son we never got to know meant nothing, and offensive lol
Leia's force powers never mentioned.
Missed opportunity with Han fixing the Falcon with a punch.
Han using chewies blaster over and over.
Kylo Ren's tantrums.
No memorable side characters.
The First Order was an embarrassment.
Hux's speech to his troops was cringe worthy.
First Order destruction of planets meant nothing.
Captain Phasma, who?
Lupita was wasted!
Max Von wasted
Snoke's lame ass design.
Cgi monster on the loose.
Couldn't hear wtf the stormtroopers were saying during some scenes.
Clone explanation made no sense.
Ship to ship battles rang hollow because the First Order sucked so bad.
Resistance command station was horribly forced and useless, zero tension!
Harnessing the power of the sun lol Doc Ock would be proud.
Destruction of First Order planet anti-climatic!
New music was boring as all hell.
The very few positives were not enough to save this movie:
Rey
BB8 very well used and adorable, he is NOT a JarJar!
Falcon's escape from Jakku.
C3PO one interaction with Han/Leia.
Lightsaber battle in the snow just as good as Darth Maul battle.
Leia, wut!
Special effects (other than Snooki), like duh.
Yes, seeing Luke still gave me goosebumps.
3D
On the fence about Finn/Poe.
The damn trailers were epic, what happened!
DiFabio was ****ing right, them happy together at the end of ROTJ was THE END!
Who would have thought, I'd end up liking this film more than you
I disagree about Kylo Ren's final fight.
They made him look weak. I thought the tantrums were hilarious, like he was a child, and the fact that everyone else seemed to be used to it made it even more hilarious
The stupidest thing is how everyone kept taking BB8 with them when they know everyone is looking for that damn thing. It made no sense.
Well..... Poe took him to Jakku because it is his droid. Rey and Finn took BB-8 with them to return him to Poe. Han took BB-8 because he didn't fully trust Rey/Finn at the time. Then the whole group takes BB-8 to Maz because it is thought to be the safest place for the droid. BB-8 then stays on that planet. Makes perfect sense.

Because it's all stuff that we've seen already. It's not original. I think the prequels are bad, but Lucas at least tried to do something different, by telling a story about Obie Wan and a young Anakin...on paper, that's a much better story than TFA, but he ruined it by not directing the actors well, unnecessary political elements, over use of CGI, and bad writing. This new film is basically a fan film made by a fan for fans. Lucas ***** up the prequels, but he wasn't trying to repeat what he already did. Having said that, I liked the new film and it's just a start.

No, when Han tells Rey and Finn to hide from those bad guys that wanted money, they didn't hide BB8 with Rey and Finn, so what happened? The bad guys recognized the damn thing. Dumb. When they get to that other planet, they could have left the droid outside or in the ship, but they took it to the bar/cantina 2.0...and what happened? Bad guys recognized it and tell the Empire...DUMB.

That's the way I see it. It was an enjoyable movie that deliberately 'resets' the franchise and lays the groundwork for - hopefully - more adventurous storytelling down the line. It's a palette cleanser movie.

Han didn't fully trust them... he thought it would be safer in his care. How was he suppose to know fellow smugglers would know?
Han thought the Cantina was a safe spot. They needed to bring BB-8 to give to Maz for her to give to Leia.
Nothing dumb about it. It was dumb for Luke and Ben to parade around Mos Eisley with R2-D2 and C-3PO to then. Why didn't they just leave them at Luke's smoldering home and have Han fly there to pick them up? You can't argue this either. Because according to you, it must be dumb, right?
Every complaint about this movie I can counter about something from the OT. It is going to be great. People will be bashing this movie along with there beloved OT!
