Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

:rock:rock:rock

After 35 years of creating Star Wars posters, artist Drew Struzan has attempted to retire, but may be lured back by the siren call of Disney’s new Star Wars trilogy. In fact, Struzan himself reports that Disney has literally called him recently to possibly return in order to create posters for the new films. While nothing is official at the moment, Struzan seems open to the idea if not overly enthusiastic about it. For fans of Struzan’s work, it would certainly be nice to see some new creations for Episodes 7, 8 and 9, and Struzan’s involvement would also lend more consistency to the look of the franchise.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I just hope he loses the gratuitous orange tint he's included in almost every poster he's done in the last 12-15 years.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Struzan is stagnant. He's become derivative of his own work which is pretty sad for an artist.

Hey look, heads and more heads. Heads on top of heads. Head beneath heads. Heads next to heads. Sometimes 3 heads sometimes 5 heads. Maybe for E7 he'll fit more heads onto a poster than any artist has ever done before!

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

His worst art, is better then this...

This poster is everything wrong with film posters today. Lazy. Uninspired. Garbage.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Both are awful. Why can't the new SW set a new standard for poster art, instead of using some cliche art.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

If it will be hand drawn, and painted, it already will be.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

What they need is to go classical, which would be new again as it hasn't been used for so long. Return to the style of the original Tom Jung SW poster.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

As much as I love the Tom Jung SW poster if it were made today there would be guys with rulers and screengrabs picking it apart for accuracy.

That said, I personally love painted film posters and want someone to put a steak though the heart of lazy photoshop film posters.

Speaking of a poster that should have been painted, John Carter should have had Frazetta style posters. This poster is sh-t. If you squint you might see Dejah Thoris way back there.

I love how Kurtz is billed before Lucas. Awesome!

Someone was tripping when they did this one:

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Having collected movie posters for (oh my God!) 30 years, and Star Wars being a massive catalyst for my interest in the first place, Jung is my favorite artist from the series. He also illustrated the Empire style A poster, better known as the "Gone with the Wind" poster.

I do also love the unusual take on the series shown off by the Style D poster.

But Struzan has become too lazy and as one poster pointed out, merely seems to copy himself. I hope Disney does not pursue Struzan.

I hope the powers that be actually go with a new artist, with a fresh take and a style that is not slavish to what has been done before. As long as it doesnt look like the teaser to Revenge of the Sith.

Edit ~ Some of those Polish posters, and other Eastern European posters were very creative and striking, but I dont think they would have the same effect here as they did overseas.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

But he DRAWS those posters. That alone makes him not as lazy as 99% of all poster "artists" today.

Give me Lazy Struzen at his utter worst, over ANYTHING today.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

You want a Lazy Susan?

That's funny, because I actually need one for my R2 build, to make his dome spin around...

I have several posters from Struzan that I love, and will always love, and I am certainly not criticizing his process. Perhaps lazy is the wrong word, I just feel like all his recent posters look the same.

That being said, Yes, there are many worse posters, which as a collector, is why I will often go more than a year at a time before I see a poster I want to add to my collection.

I certainly prefer the actual drawn and painted look over the crappy photoshopped posters that are far too common. I am just wishing for something bold and new.

The Style A is one of the reasons I fell in love with poster art in the first place, and some of Struzans work solidified that love as well.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I have to agree with Celtic to an extent. They're lovely works in their own right - regardless of their same-y nature. Consistency through the entire series is a good thing too. Still - I'd welcome something new.. if it showcased real artistic talent.. & not just night college accredited PC skills.

Btw - that John Carter poster IS definitely $h!t. Talk about non inspired lazy ai$$ work.

****n shame. That film deserved far better than it got all round.
