Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Honestly I'd like for all the history lessons to end and to see uncharted territory

This sentiment begs the question: why not start with a totally new space opera with new characters and plots altogether?

Star Wars has been pretty well played out since 1983, no?
(I'd make an exception for Tartakovsky's Clone Wars)

At the very freakin' least, I'd hope we finally get to see some decent lightsaber swordplay.
The cheesy Chinese style of spinning blades, flipping and casual sword twirls were ridiculous and completely neutered what should have been amazingly dynamic fencing. I personally cheered when Quite Gone Gin died because his swordplay was like that of a spastic cheerleader. Maul should have cut off Quiggy's d!ck and shoved it up his a$$ for fencing like such a goofball.

Having a massless blade with a universal cutting edge invites the promise of something new, something that's never been seen before.
Instead, we got the usual flashy kung-fu cliches and baton twirling. Just unrealistic spinning, flipping and the same two handed strikes over and over again.
Lucas's Jedi always swing their blades like hyperactive kids when instead they should be fighting almost completely with their wrists. These dudes are supposed to be practically precognitives, yet they telegraph their moves to a ridiculous extent.
The Sidious vs. Windu fight was cringe-worthy choreography. And that's compared to Vader vs. Kenobi in ANH! :lol

Count Dookie-ball came the closest to actual fencing.
Yoda resembled Sonic the Hedgehog. Face-palmingly laughable, the prequel swordplay was.

The moment that ruined the saber fight for me in ROTS

I agree the new trilogy needs fewer lightsaber fights, and when they happen they need to be done better.

The Anakin vs Obi Wan fight was great. Same with Maul vs Obi wan.

Yeah, that was horrid. But I gotta admit, the battle between Obi and Anakin with Obi's diologue at the end was the height of the PT for me. It's really the only thing I'll watch from the PT from time to time. Of course the diologue throughout the saber battle was atrocious but I can get through it.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

After reading that Marcia Lucas story a few pages back, I'm more convinced than ever Lucas' stuff just isn't good on its' own. It's wooden and disconnected emotionally. It really brought the man off his pedestal. She brought those human touches to the OT that the PT just lacked.

This makes me excited that he has limited involvement in these next SW movies. Better storytellers will bring better movies.

The Duel of fates is the best duel out of the saga, when Qui gon dies, the Darth Maul vs Obi wan is superb, Obi wan using his complete power to Destroy Maul his foe.

Ridiculous and laughable.

I was impressed by his ability to use a jedi mind trick on another jedi when he persuaded Maul not to do the obvious thing and cut him in half as he leapfrogged over Maul from an incredibly disadvantaged position. The rest of the battle was very enjoyable though, if too overly choreographed to be believable.

Actually I think there's a moment during the Mace Windu/Palpatine duel that is MUCH worse than that. At one point Mace literally stops fighting and holds his arms out at his sides leaving himself completely defenseless for like three seconds while Palpatine just stands there refusing to attack him.

Utterly nonsensical and stupid.

That whole scene was tough to watch. Seriously, some of the worst acting SLJ has done. Not that the dialogue was much help. That yell he does after he gets his hand cut off....:lol

That's why these new movies are so exciting. They just can't be as bad as what was done in the PT.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

They CAN be as bad. But I take comfort in the fact that they can't be any worse.

:exactly:

This fella from Command D knows what he says.

They should have slain each other about--what--35 times in that shot alone? :cuckoo:

Actually, all of the choreography with Mace and the other Jedi Vs. Palpatine was terrible. The other 3 Jedi just die almost immediately without trying to block at all, that really really really annoyed me when I saw that. Like somehow they couldn't avoid his little spinny move and then he basically just walks up and stabs the guy, WTF.

Still, I'm OK with the prequels, they should have been better but they weren't that bad. Just take a look at the reviews at Rotten Tomatoes, they're all at a level where you would consider them a good movie, ROTS is even at 80% which is pretty damn good.
