Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I have to agree with Celtic to an extent. They're lovely works in their own right - regardless of their same-y nature. Consistency through the entire series is a good thing too. Still - I'd welcome something new.. if it showcased real artistic talent.. & not just night college accredited PC skills.

Btw - that John Carter poster IS definitely $h!t. Talk about non inspired lazy ai$$ work.

****n shame. That film deserved far better than it got all round.

I do agree, that if I had to choose between the run of the mill poster art showing off all that Photoshop has to offer, and a new Struzan work, I would go with Struzan. But, when the movies were released originally, they had many different posters showcasing the talents of different artists, I would like to return to that way of doing things.

I have no hate for Drew Struzan, I would just like something different, rather than the unified look we have gotten over the years. You want a Struzan poster? That's fine, but do a style B and C as well, or even a style D, like they used to.

I'd be down with that too. :duff

These two are my faves (from what I'm aware of):

It's all good, as they say. :1-1:

Only thing is more posters puts more hurt on my wallet, and makes the mad dash to find them even more tiring, but I wouldnt do it if I didnt love collecting them in the first place. :)

That first poster is actually a Hildebrandt version of the Tom Jung Style A and the second is the British Quad version of the Empire Style B, the one that replaced the "Gone with the Wind" style A, due to Billy Dee's lawsuit.

If you like that Empire poster, the Star Wars style A half sheet is very nice as well.

I was looking at the prices on that site, (Holy Cow!) with my collection I should be able to retire, sadly I dont think I could part with them.

I don't believe Billy Dee Williams sued. I believe he complained. They could have simply ignored him but they chose to comply with his wishes. The original poster was never recalled either. They simply phased it out with the newer styles eventually. Do posters today have a bunch of styles and do theaters bother changing the posters often to the newer styles?

I agree 100% with Celtic. Struzan's posters (along with Williams' score) are among the best things from the prequels I can't complain about. The redundancy of floating heads and the color orange are valid nitpicks. But that's all they are. Nitpicks. Beats the crap out of the stupid VHS/DVD covers they've been giving us the past 20 years....

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I love Struzan, but every single one of his SE posters had some pretty glaring character continuity errors. TESB Leia on ANH poster. ROTJ Palpatine and Vader on TESB poster. TESB duel prominently featured on ROTJ poster. He got his references all mixed up and never bothered to fix them. I was always baffled they made it out that way. Then again, K07 is right... look at the alternative crap that LFL pumped out. I'd take another Struzan piece with a gazillion continuity errors in a heatbeat over that ****.

Actually, of all the photoshop jobs, these aren't bad. They're simple and faithful to the source material. It's not all shiny and polished but actually looks like it came from the film. Nolstagia may be clouding my judgement. I still have this boxset and won't part with it:

And while looking these up, I found this which actually looks pretty neat. I'd like to see TPM and AotC in the same style:

Maul and Jango would likely be the portrait. I'd slap the podrace on TPM and the Battle of Kamino on AotC.

Its not so much that he got his references wrong its just that he made (or was instructed to make) them as one giant "trilogy mural" that works if you display them together but sucks if you're looking at any one individually.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Yeah, but he could have achieved the same result by just painting the characters as they appeared in their respective films.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Looking at the ANH poster I wonder if Fisher will have a contract requirement that she gets final approval on her hair.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Floating heads...:lol. He focuses too much on characters and vehicles and it doesn't allow for proper scale of the story.

A story isn't simply a summation of the stars in their costume and makeup. Those posters don't give me any sense of wonder or aww. Its simply a "look Harrison Ford is in this".

I don't know who the respected artist of these are but I'll take this

over the below derivative concept every day of the week.

Yeah, don't know why Leia couldn't have had her ANH hair and the ROTJ poster couldn't have just shown Luke and Vader dueling as they appeared in that film. :dunno

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I never even noticed that, but then I don't have those anyway.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

That original LOTR art from Struzan just goes to show you how far he's fallen and become derivative of his own cliched style.

If it's drawn, it's great.

See where i'm going here? Draw a damn picture once in a while film studios. :lol

Meh. While I agree that photoshopping is a sin, being stagnat "drawn" art is still stagnant and uncreative.

Its time to retire when your work becomes so familiar that its now passe and cliche. Hope he stays retired unless he comes back with a new sense of direction with his work.
