Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Yeah, that dawned on me the other day as well. Pegg is also a huge, HUGE OT fan.

And highly critical of the PT. Thats the only doubt in my mind. Lucas still has some involvement and one wonders will he want anyone near it that is known to dislike his prequels?

The film was clearly a triumph and made its fortune for good reason.

I don't think that'll matter at all. In fact, Pegg was hanging out at Skywalker Ranch just this past Summer.

Also, if I'm not mistaken Kasdan also had less than nice things to say about the PT, and he's on board, so...

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

All we know right now is that it will feature time travelling lens flares.

:lol

Seriously though, I'm not sure where all the "time travel" stuff is coming from. It was in "Star Trek". Not in "Fringe"(that's all about an alternate universe, not time travel), not in "Cloverfield", not in "Super 8" (though Abrams does show how adept he is at recreating the feel of another time!), not in MI:3. I never watched "Lost" - did that have time travel?

Oh, and the lens flare...yeah, that's another story. I hope he can at least keep it to a minimum in Star Wars. A hangar scene, maybe during a climactic duel? It would be nice to see the image past the flare, J.J.!

Okay! Just trying to illustrate that Whedon can do a hugely successful and accessible big-budget Summer blockbuster film, that's based on an established franchise with a die hard following, full of action, fun, aliens, tech, and even some pathos. I think he could handle Star Wars...

Pegg could make a cool supporting character. His brand of humor would be better suited than the battle droids. Or Jar jar.

Pegg has already done some voice work for the clone wars so I'd imagine that there is little in the way of bad blood between them.

Exactly. And this isn't like Alien Resurrection where the series went from being a serious horror film in space to being a parody of itself (also I question how much of that was Whedon's fault) - Star Wars has always been a great blend of lightheartedness and seriousness. Its perfect for Whedon. I could easily see him pulling off an ESB level film. Obviously hes not doing Episode VII but if other directors are to be considered for 8 and 9, or any of these other SW film projects Whedon should absolutely be given a call.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

My choices to direct would have been Abrams or Whedon but I didn't think either would have the time with everything else they had going on. I still can't believe this is really happening!

I know, after being told repeatedly by Lucas that Episodes VII, VIII, and IX would never happen, I keep waiting for someone to step out from shadows and say "Surprise! It was all a big joke! You should see the look on your faces...!"

The fact that Kennedy is handling the whole project so adeptly makes it more dream-like; the woman has focus like a laser! Again, I can't shake the feeling that Lucas has some hidden clause in his deal with Disney that will allow him to pull the rug out from under at the last minute (not literally, but it's all going toooo well, if you know what I mean) - that's what his attitude toward the fans for the past 20+ years has led to...

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Lucas planned it all along, there is a interview in the 80's with Mark hamill, saying Lucas asked him how he would feel about doing more films around 2012 and handing the torch to a new generation.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I hope you're not allowing your disgust at HT making sweet F all but Avengers figures cloud your judgment of the actual film.

Whedon is just better at TV than film is all, just because i don't worship the film as the greatest thing since sliced bread doesn't mean i hate it.

I'm hoping for a BA Sith Lord this time around. GL killed off Darth Maul way too easily.

Maul was the best thing about TPM, such a shame he wasted such a cool character.

Even more a shame since he kept Jar Jar, the guy who gave the Chancellor more power to become the Emporer :slap

Whatever people think of his writing skills, the guy is a helluva businessman

Looks like JJ could push the release date back to 2016, not definite though. I thought 2015 was a bit optimistic to get all done.

I just don't understand how you can look at that film and suggest that Whedon couldn't handle a Star Wars film.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

JJ is an excellent choice.

Look at what GL did to this franchise in the prequels! Stupid characters with horrible scripts and zero depth and character development. Everything was CG. Horrible acting. It was like every part was as embarrassing as Chewbaccas Tarzan swing addition. As a hardcore fan, I found myself picking the pepper out the fly***** like Maul and a couple other sorta cool parts to make it tolerable.

I say bring on someone who's shown he can take a well rounded series like Star Trek and reintroduce it to the world in a way that tastefully stays true to the characters origin and makes the conscious decision to put something in or remove it before whether or not it will sell lunch boxes and action figures.

Star Wars done right is an investment. When the originals launched there was no cartoon to keep people's interest in the saga. The movies finished and the fandom didn't die out. Not so much the case with the prequels. With Disney at the helm, I'm hoping that's the goal instead of making short term gains.
