I get such a kick out of people feeding their kids when they're that old. We still have parents who stay with their kindergarten kids to feed them breakfast. :gah:

Picked up the new Cinefex today because this month they're doing The Force Awakens and Ex Machina. Pretty awesome that Phil Tippet recreated the Falcon chess board pieces as stop motion puppets again!

My collection is digital , ripped 1:1 from my dvd collection to 6 hard drives, most are 1:1 copies or close to it. I still own the discs but they are stored in the attic. ( 3 HD are backups.)

Essentially its a Netflix of my own making, on demand, with movie posters I choose ( and can change) extras I want or do not want ( which saves on space) , and i can choose any movie to watch instantly on any TV or device in my house, back yard, hotel park wherever I have connection.

Quality is 1:1 or less depending on the desire . Naturally a 1:1 rip of Pee Wee's big adventure is unneeded, but the LOTR trilogy naturally is a blue ray 1:1 rip, at no encoded streaming. Its exactly like the blue ray. Granted my PC is a monster server so the streaming is perfect and fed through hardwire.

I Love the ease and space saving nature of PLEX, and after a few day of separation anxiety I didn't miss the discs at all. Much like I do not miss 8 track or vinyl. (i am of the X generation so it not generational)

I highly recommend you all read up on it a bit, I was skeptical at first, but after seeing my friends up and running I was blown away....good thing HD's are getting cheaper!

BTW Luke is NOT gay, MH was being gracious and polite ( as he is in person, got to spend an afternoon with him and Ford once) . Disney will never put a gay character in SW its still too much of a hot button for conservatives.

That's different than streaming from the internet though which was what we were discussing.

You have an internal system of all your movies backed up in a hard drive, nothing wrong with that.

I thought we were talking about local digital copies too? My rips are H.264 which reduces the file size to about a quarter of the original with little to no discernible loss in quality (to mine eyes anyway).

I think the discussion started of my post about my Plex server thou....

I ran across a video of this online a while back and it was fascinating to see the lengths they went to, to try to remain authentic. I remember it showed that they tracked down most of the original puppets and scanned them to make new puppets (the originals were made of a material that had deteriorated quite a bit over the years). I remember they said Peter Jackson has one of the originals in his collection and several of them were still at Lucasfilm. If I remember right, I think they said there were two of the originals that they couldn't track down. I was impressed that they committed to doing the sequence with puppets again, all for a gag that only lasts a couple seconds in the finished film. Pretty cool.

Very cool indeed what you fellas did with your home plex servers but for me personaly the amount of time it would take for me to back up my entire bluray/dvd collection onto hard drives would negate any time saved from not having to get up off the couch to switch dvd's. :lol

Regarding internet streaming, I do use it for rentals on movies that more than likely I won't buy.

So there is some value to internet movie streaming. :lol

My SW movie collection is riduculous

I have all the movies starting with the OT on VHS too all OT DVD versions boxed sets ( including the gold and silver sets before Lucas changed them ) to the complete movie blu Ray set and the Lucas original theatrical cut OT DVDs

I still have the PT on DVDs..yikes :lol

Obsolete? Maybe. Gone? No way. People still have record players/vinyl collections. I'll definitely be one of those guys who holds onto the "old tech" until my dying breath.

And I know many people who still own operating VHS and 8 Track players. :lol

I still have a record player and a handful of vinyl records. :D

CDs were supposed to be obsolete years ago, yet they're still here and I buy them. Most people can find them online cheaper than in store these days. They get rid of CDs, I'll go back to vinyl.

I buy CDs all the time. I do occasionally get some digital music which I burn onto a blank CD. :D

I found out the hard way that NTSC tapes didn't play on PAL players when I bought this ...

Cost me hundreds to have them converted!

I also briefly considered spending $A700 on the complete Star Trek TNG series on VHS. Glad I decided against that.

Yes, mine has been a multi-year project - definitely not the sort of thing that can be achieved overnight! And obviously computing power counts for a lot in ripping speed.

Hee hee....Yea....time intensive.

With almost 2TB of movies at this point, the conversion was a long haul. But I also paired down my collection at the same time. It was cathartic at first , because it made me realize how many DVD's I bought and held on to and NEVER re watched (Out of Time , I am looking at you...) I used to buy DVD's that were rentals just because it cost 2 bucks more to buy than rent.

I started by putting my top movies on the server at highest or loss less quality. My handbrake settings are really streamlined so it takes about 25 minutes to rip it to an MKV container. BR takes a hell of alot longer, thankfully I left those for last.

Next went movies I only watch a few times, they were ripped at 720 quality. , again 15-20 minutes per film.

Last were the kids movies and my family home movies.

I was ripping about 4-5 per day at the beginning.

I still rip about 2-3 week, depending on whats released. My collection went from 800 to about 400...

Ripping is as simple as putting the DVD in the drive and hitting start. So I did them while working around the house, watching TV or gaming. You can easily burn 2-5 per evening.

Again, having a powerful PC makes a hug difference. You can set up a totally independent NAS for this purpose....I was going to do that, but I was surprised how well my regular server handles everything. I can stream to multiple devices, surf , play games etc all at the same time , no issues.

Here's a very basic link..
How To: Set Up And Use A Plex Server - Maximum PC

Appreciate the link, :hi5: but I already have my own server set up at home, but only for my son's movies and our home movies.

I stopped it there. :lol

My friend has 3,000 movies ripped to his plex! :thud:

Not saying this necessarily applies to your friend, but a lot of guys have the "biggest collection" mentality. They'll amass a huge library just for the sake of saying "mine's bigger than yours".

I try to be ultra-selective, since I'll rarely repeat-watch even my favourite stuff. Plus it makes navigation easier.
