Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I had long ago accepted that the EU would be ignored just as it had been for the Prequels. If possible, I'd love them to just ignore this 30 year gap and let us use our imaginations as to what filled that void but even if they don't and they contradict the EU as it has been established, I think I can live with that.

Great news on set pieces! TPM has quite a bit of set pieces/miniatures and I hope this has just as much with better CGI complementing it all.

I keep saying it over and over.
All we need to see to NOT piss off the EU fans, is for abrams to pay Lip service to the EU.

No details, no specific information. Just lip service.

All the "facts" we knew about the clone wars, was they happened, and Obi-wan fought in them, and the Empire rose out of it.

30 year gap? cool. Put these "facts" into the new movie.

The Galactic Alliance is now teh Governing body of the Galaxy.
Han and Leia got married, had kids, and a grandchild. There has been war and conflict in the intervening time since the last movie. Chewie, and two of the three children Han and Leia had Died fighting in that conflict. They now raise their grandchild as their own.
Luke HAD a wife ( she's dead now) and a son.
Luke Restarted teh Jedi order, using what Yoda Taught him.
The Sith have returned to the Galaxy, and lurk out there, somewhere, beyond the outer rim.

That's it. That's all they would need. WE don't even need to be TOLD this, it can be shown.

The prequels had the opposite problem. Telling us things rather than showing it. Like Obi-wan training Anakin. Like them being friends. Like Padme falling for Anakin....somehow.

Yeah... no.

No, there's a huge number of people who don't like the EU nor are they familiar with it. We don't need to tell the audience about any of this. If they simply don't mention anything that happened within that 30 year gap, wouldn't both kinds of fan (EU fans and EU haters) be happy? I would be satisfied if they don't just disregard a rich history of stories that I grew up with and that they had taken the time to map out as to fit within a sort of continuity and canon.

If they choose to make up new, unheard events in this movie that contradict the EU just for the sake of doing so, it will tick off EU fans. If there's an important event that happened that helps shape the galaxy/characters as we see them in this movie that's worth mentioning and it contradicts the EU, I'd be more willing to forgive the writers.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Personally I'd rather have EU referances than for the new films to acknowledge Episodes I-III.

I'd be fine with it to, tbqh. I'd like to see those things, but not having them is no deal breaker.

how about neither

Twofold question: you seem to loathe the EU, and want no reference to it at all. why?

So.. You'd rather have had 30 years pass... And have had nothing happen at all?

Time is going to have passed. Something's got to fill that 30 year window, why not let it be some of the established history. Very little specifics.
The less we know, the better.

It's likely Han and Leia had a family, given where we left them, at the end of ROTJ.

Luke was flat out told to restart the Jedi order by yoda. To pass on what he had learned. He is the most experienced one, add on 30 years, he would likely be running the new order.
Luke was never told not to love and star a family of his own. He even knew his father did exactly that. So why is it unlikely to think that Luke wouldn't?

In the OT, the Galactic Empire ruled the galaxy.
The remains of the republic became the rebel alliance.

Why would the new government being called The Galactic Alliance be such a stretch?

Chewbacca was OLD, and I'm fairly certain that his actor, Peter mayhew, is now retired.
Let chewie die, and rest in piece. They don't need to tell us how he died.

How would having any of these things in the new films, even if ey are hit on very very vaguely, be a bad thing?

:exactly:

I don't give a **** what random writers were putting out happened and I hope it has nothing to do with/influence the next set of movies.
