Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread
I remember when Ep 1 was coming out and there was so much hype and buzz about it. The trailers looked excellent, and after years of no new SW, it was incredibly exciting. I do remember there were some odd comments made here and there from the SW camp, like they were trying to temper expectations. I remember they were (overly) emphasizing that they wanted to make these fun and appeal to a new generation of fans.
Anyway, I remember that tickets for Ep 1 went on sale weeks before, and I mentioned to my wife (GF at the time) that perhaps we should secure our tickets. She scoffed and said it probably wasn't necessary since there were so many showings scheduled. She was right. Opening weekend we went right in without a problem. When we finally watched the movie, I was so incredibly disappointed. It was truly worse than I could have imagined, and even more so because it caught me unawares. At least for Episodes 2 and 3 I knew what to expect. And even more terrible, I was mortified and embarrassed about it with my wife (who hadn't seen the OT at the time), who practically laughed at me saying, "THAT is what you've been obsessing about your whole life?!? LOL!" (I married her anyway!
)
So yeah. Terrible. The designs are all great, and I love the worlds that have been created in the New Trilogy. But damn, those scripts needed some major fleshing out by someone who knew what they were doing.
Every SW fan should watch the Red Letter Media reviews:

Whether you like the new movies or not, you can't deny he makes valid and objective points across the board.
And oh yeah, I remember reading somewhere (might have even been the Red Letter Media review) that they should have switched roles for when Anakin and Obi Wan chase after Zam. It should have been Anakin, the reckless one, to jump out the window and grab the assassin droid, and Obi Wan, the practical wiser one, to go get a ship. That alone would have done so much to further establish the characterization of these two.
