If the PT was so crappy why are people asking for one of the lead characters to return?

ANH and ESB were the best 2 editions and they had no or little mention of the Emperor.

He's absolutely non essential for the new trilogy.

At first I was going to agree then I remembered how awesome he was in ROTJ.

I consider him first and foremost a ROTJ character, not a PT character. I don't think I'd have a problem with him being back.

For one you know damn well It's the Emperor from the OT people remembering. And even so, Palpatine/Ian is one of the best things that came out of the PT.

He worked best as an "oh ****, NOW the rebels are really in for it" effect in ROTJ. But trying to tell a huge story around him I think he became too clunky. The series began to revolve around his machinations rather than Anakin/Vader.

The PT already ruined Vader to some extent, if you bypass Vader and have the Emperor return for the new films it basically makes Vader no more important than Count Dooku and Darth Maul.

I think we're just getting a remake of ROTJ called Episode 7.

Good idea. Instead of Episodes VII-IX they can just call them Return of the Jedi Part II, III, and IV.

And they can break each one up into 3 films.

if the Emperor is only a a force ghost, nothing is negated. he would simply be an influence... a starting point. a Sith - mix of Obi Wan and Yoda seen only by the Sith Master in waiting (presumably one of the OT's children).

I would love to see him back. He came out of the PT unscathed. Great actor. And he was always one of my favorite characters in the OT.

He pretty much is the Empire/Sith. If there was an entirely new baddie, would it really be Episode VII of a series or a new spin off?
There has to be some continuity of story, not just some of the original characters appearing.

umm..They were fighting the Empire? ..and the leader of the Empire is The Emperor?
Sure we didn't see him until the second movie, but he was an integral part of the OT.
And he saved Jedi from the teddies.


Maybe he's not playing Palpatine at all in the new trilogy, but is his much better-natured older brother Turpentine?

Palpatine is the puppet master, he spent years trying to get Anakin's mother pregnant from the other side of the galaxy, he then spent 13 years twisting Anakin into Darth Vader whilst Anakin was either locked up in the Jedi Temple or whizzing across the galaxy with Obi-Wan on missions. So why can't he be pulling the strings as a Force Ghost?
