Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I'd like to see (but it won't happen) an end to the sillier Star Wars tie-ins. Angry Birds, Lego cartoons, Family Guy, various Star Wars comedies....

I'd like to see Disney make Star Wars cool again instead of the butt of jokes.

Too much money to be lost.

Star Wars gets sold to the only merchandising monster bigger than Star Wars and you're hoping they stop merchandising? :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

The PT was a huge calculated cash grab , to sell merchadise and keep the name brand going. Period. How they came out as films is to each own's tastes.
This new trilogy is a very calculated cash grab again, but at least they are trying to put some artistic merit back into the films with the writers involved. JJ is a talented director but I don't see that as important as the scripts.
Disney is going to make a mountain of dough from these, as well they should for putting so much money to make them. I'm hoping Episode VII will be better than the PT but that isn't shooting for much really...

Agreed- plot thrown together in a day and sloppily executed.......just bad in parts- only climatic Luke/Vader/Emperor confrontation shows life..
Amazing how this thing is SO BIG over so many mediocre movies(only first two are classic)

Space battle is also legendary though.

But the movie has some major issues no doubt, yet when those issues are compared to the PT, they don't seem so bad. :lol

IGN:

We've heard a lot of buzz about Star Wars: Episode VII lately, but what about Disney and Lucasfilm's planned Star Wars spinoffs?

As we learned earlier this year, Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan are hard at work developing standalone Star Wars movies to be released in between Episodes VII, VIII and IX, with the first one slated for 2016. Possible characters rumored for these films are Boba Fett, Han Solo, and even Yoda. Other than that, though, we haven't heard much of anything about these movies.
However, at a recent Disney investor conference, Disney CFO Jay Rasulo referred to these films not as "spinoffs" or "standalone movies," but as "origin story films." (The quote comes from Variety.) Of course, origin stories are kind of what we expected out of these things, if the rumors from February were to be believed. Nevertheless, the fact that a legitimate Disney executive called them origin stories definitely lends some credibility to those earlier reports.

For characters like Han Solo and Yoda, origin stories seem very much within the realm of possibility, as their beginnings haven't really been touched on in the movies or TV. Boba Fett on the other hand has had a pretty thorough background check, even after the events of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones. In addition to comics and video games, the character was also prominently featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Whether these new movies would adhere to that canon is unknown, but it's certainly something to think about if Kinberg and Kasdan end up going that route.

I think that Lucas was actually more interested in the technical achievements and pushing his agenda of digital cinema. That is the legacy of the prequels--the death of film and the transition to digital filming and exhibition. He was more interested in the technological advances in digital filming, editing, visual effects and theatrical presentation than he was interested in story, acting, etc. If it was all just a cash grab, it makes little sense for him to sell Lucasfilm and donate most of the proceeds.

If anything, this new phase of Star Wars from Disney is all about the money. They are giving the fans exactly what they want in order to reap maximum profits. Lucas didn't care about the fans and made the movies he wanted to make, basically for himself. He wanted to see if he could pull off a fully CG character like Jar-Jar, and it didn't matter whether or not the fans wanted to see it.

The prequels were all about Lucas trying to advance digital film-making, while Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm and production of a new Star Wars film every year for eternity--that is the cash grab.

UGH. Origin stories. :slap Leave mysterious pasts be! The need for an origin story brought us the prequels!:monkey4

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

We already know Fett's origin... Han's could be good, but they'd really need to find the right guy for the part. That's crucial. Yoda... not so sure...

I agree with everything you said. And once again how ironic that the new movie will be shot on celluloid. :lol

Not as far as I'm concerned. All we saw was a little ****** named Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones. As far as I'm concerned the gravelly voiced badass from ESB killed that kid and took over his name and ship, Dread Pirate Roberts-style. And I'm sticking to it. :lecture

I had to check the thread title to make sure we weren't talking about Man of Steel here.

Hey, that's a great idea! I'm gonna sear that in my brain now... :hi5:

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I really really don't want to see an origin story of Yoda. I'd rather see some stories like Knights of the Old Replublic, Dawn of the Jedi or Darth Bane or something like that.
