Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

i am certain that Arndt was capable of writing a great treatment. i am saddened to see him go. i worry that the storytelling has now taken a backseat to something else…

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I'm just worried that Abrams will have stuff in there like what was in the Star Trek movies, the simple things that were really obvious and easy to fix

There was probably too much storytelling and not enough glib hilarious character interaction. I didn't mind Abrams take on Trek because I'm not a Trek fan, but I have a feeling hes going to be a wrecking ball in Star Wars. Guess we'll find out eventually if his vision works.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

when i first heard that Arndt was writing the script, i thought this is exactly what the franchise needed... heart. when Abrams signed on, i thought it would be an interesting balance of heart and flash. now that Arndt is gone, i am worried that we will be left with only flash.

At least Orci and Kurtzman aren't writing.

yes, hope is not lost... i am assuming with Arndt out, Lucas' outline may also possibly be out... or at the very least, in need of an overhaul.

with this, is summer 2015 still realistic?

Just incase you don't feel like clicking the link, here it goes:

BAD:

It's just been announced that the new writers of Star Wars Episode VII are Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams, replacing Michael Arndt. With the film supposedly shooting in just a few months this is a big deal, and one that bodes ill for a May 2015 release, which people still think is happening. I've previously reported that I heard Disney was setting the film for a December 2015 release, but today's news makes a 2016 release very, very plausible.

A couple of months ago I reported that I heard there was tension inside the production, and that JJ Abrams had been making noise about leaving. That got picked up (erroneously) by other outlets saying Abrams WAS leaving. My understanding is that the tension was about a lot of issues, including release dates and schedules, but also about the script. Abrams wasn't satisfied with what Michael Arndt had written and wanted to take a crack at it. While it was announced today, I heard they scrapped the entire Arndt script as early as July, but I didn't know that meant they were scrapping Arndt as well.

What's the big change? My sources tell me that the focus of the story has changed in a big way, that it's a whole new set of characters being followed than in the Arndt script. I don't want to say much more than that, because I just don't know how in flux things are and I'm sick of being misquoted on this stuff, but it seems like there's a complete overhaul. Top to bottom. This isn't a rewrite, this is a completely different movie with different main characters.

Just this morning I mused that the best unintended side effect of hiring JJ Abrams to direct was that people assumed the lack of Star Wars news was the Mystery Box in play. I knew it wasn't, and now everybody does as well - we haven't heard anything because this movie is still finding its way. That's good news, though - better that the film take its time in pre-production than be rushed to meet an arbitrary release date that will please OCD fans.

Wonder what the big announcement will be on the 30th? george lucas as the new Director..?:)

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Well, I thought Michael Arndt was an interesting choice. I hope this doesn't become some development hell like Alien 3...
At any rate, how will this be a completely new movie? Wasn't the groundwork laid out by Lucas?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I'm sure that Arndt got a serviceable story. They're probably fleshing out the character moments and character arcs to make them a bit more impactful. At least, that's what I'm telling myself...

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Arndt REFUSED to adhere to the flow of existing story that is the EU.
Appearetly Abrams plans to pay triute to it, accept that ALL of it happened, and just keep moving the story forward.
Arndt Wanted to Make Chewie Mute, unless he was able to get into The Rebellion Pilot's academy, But As Chewie is dead, he was told no. this evolved into a MASSIVE argument, which led to Abrams cutting his the Jr miss universe pagent subplot ( similar to the podrace subplot in EP1) from the second Act of the film entirely due to spite. This pushed Arndt over the edge, and he has since quit the project.

Where did that info come from?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

It came from sources who wish to remain secret, so It's just as valid as any other internet rumor.

And I take none of you have seen little miss sunshine.

No, Arndt wanted to expand E.T.'s cameo from TPM into a full fledged return to Earth, with Sith invaders following and the people of Earth countering with their newly developed Robotech Defense Force. Abrams said no and brought Kasdan in to rewrite.

See how easy it is to post details without any source to back it up?

I take none of you have seen little miss sunshine.

EDIT: Ah, missed the joke. My bad.
