I heard about the ET's too, I'm just not so sure it's too terribly Valid, as I've not yet heard anything about any Spielburg envolvement yet.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Chewie dies during a planet-wide evacuation. He SPECIFICLY dies saving the life of Han and Leia's youngest son.

10) George Lucas killed Chewbacca. The most famous Wookiee died off in a novel called Vector Prime by R.A. Salvatore. Nobody particularly wanted to kill off Chewbacca, but the authors and editors of the Expanded Universe novels wanted to kill off one of the well-known characters, because they felt as though nobody was taking the books seriously any more. So the book editors wrote to George Lucas with a list of characters they'd like to be able to kill off, with Luke Skywalker on the top of the list. Lucas wrote back with a list of characters it was not okay to kill off — and poor Chewy wasn't on that list. This was one lottery it was not a good idea to let the Wookiee win.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

EU won't really get considered in EPVII .. they said that from the get go

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Since Lucas doesn't consider the EU to be canon why did he ever give a crap what they did in the books? Why did he care who they killed?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Right, becuase there are NO OTHER tall aliens in star wars, Right?

Or OTHER WOOKIES. Chewbacca was the last survivor of that race.

Also, wasn't that casting debunked as a rumor, ir is that new one?

All in all, they've established on the screen the Chewbacca was VERY OLD.
While I'm not expecting them to go into the details of his death, I'm NOT expecting to see him.

Much Like Henry Jones Sr. in Indy 4

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I thought Ford demanded Kill Solo in the first 15 minutes leaving Chewie to enlist Luke and Leia (now divorced with 2 teenage kids still sponging off her royal pension so they can enlist in Uncle Luke's Academy) to get revenge for Solo. Luke being Luke can't seek revenge as it isn't a Jedi trait so requires guidance from spirit of his old mentor (now the youthfull Obi-Wan as Anakin taught him and Yoda how to grow young again with the Force). So off they fly in the Millenium Falcon, still battered and beaten up, piloted by Lando who's taken time off from running a clean up operation for all the polution caused by the galaxy using Tibanna gas products. They arrive on the distan planet of Whogivesa*** to do battle with the Hutts who killed Solo in revenge for his original debt to Jabba from 35 years ago, which they recently uncovered whilst restoring Jabba's palace on Tatooine.

Becuase the " Lucas dosn't consider the EU to be canon" Is a fanboy misnomer. It's taking something he said, and running with it, twisting it to suit the needs and wants of the OT purists. Kinda Like Republicans and The Bible/Christian Religion.

What he ACTUALY said was As he sees it, there are three "Levels" or "tiers" of Star Wars.

There is " HIS CREATIONS" Which is the films. These are His creations. these are the " Official vision" of the movies as he sees them.
This is First Tier Canon, and can Trump all other tiers.

One step beyond that is the "Visual media" he is not DIRECTLY involved in. This includes the HOliday special, CLone wars, etc. This is part of the universe. He does have a hand in them, and is more or less aware of what's going on, how it effects and gives approvals on what can and can't be done.
This is Second Tier canon, and Trump Itself, and written media

The Last Tier is Written media. Comics, Noves, and Etc. This is where he has invited other people to play in his universe. it IS part of the story, and he IS aware of the MAJOR events, and REquires approval for ( as well as suggests) big changes to the universe. Killing Chewbacca is an example. That was Approved, amd more or less picked BY Lucas to happen.
Written media Tier Can't overwrite any other, and is frequently retconned by the other two.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I see lerath is campaigning hard for the EU's benefit in the news. :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

yes i read Vector Prime, but that was the EU, i heard abrams sacked Arndt due to him wanting to keep chewie in it, but abrams hates wookies or giants so he told Arndt to leave and go **** him self. :(

Not sure if serious.

Though the popular word is that Abrams is an established FAN of the EU, who has said he " Will pay tribute to, and Honor what has come before, but NOT revere it" when it comes to the EU.

I'm expecting the time inbetween to not COMPLETELY contradict it, but be kept vague enough that it CAN fit with the established EU, or possibly not.

Little ques taken from it, so they don't completely shoot that Arm of the Lucasfilm liscensing buisness in the head. But not adhere to it so strictly that it turns off people who don't know about it, or who don't care for it.

Kinda sorta, not really.

More campaigning for common sense. There is the usual " I HATE TA READ SO DA EU IS BAD" sillies going on, I'm simply trying to pull things back to the middle ground with some thinking, and common sense.

My biggest Thought on this whole thing, is concern for The return of Lawrence kasdan.

Might be good, Might be bad.

People thought Chris Clairmont Returning to write X-men in the 90's would be a second golden age....

Lets just say it wasn't what we were expecting.

I'm hoping we don't see something like that.

My OT purism only goes so far as disregarding the prequels. I have no particular problem with the EU. As much of it that I read was better than the PT IMO.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I've noticed how JJ has strictly adhered to Star Trek canon...

He Stuck to it solidly enough, and gave a reason for a reboot.
Time-travel Shenanigans resulting in the creation of a divergent Timeline.

So it's not really compareable.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Quote please. Gonna have to provide sources on that one, as Abras has publicly said otherwise.

thats the only I could find running over google real quick but I remember reading that over and over early on..

https://www.eonline.com/news/358685/star-wars-7-plot-will-be-an-original-story-says-lucasfilm-source

And yes.. SW has huge aliens.. but I bet you we will see Chewie back !! Even Peter Meyhew tried to get fit.. it was never confirmed but all signs are there.. sorry to break your strong EU bond here.. but I am sure we won't see the Vong neither as other EU stuff

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

AH! that. yeah, that was said early on, that it will be an Original film, and a NEW story, not adapted from the books.

Meaning it will not be based on any existing story.

That dosn't mean iit's not going to take place AFTER the EU as it stands currently.

As for Mayhew, all we have is a SINGLE COMMENT from him that he plans to persue the Role of Chewbacca, IF IT IS AVALIBLE.

I'm not expecting to see the Vong war, or the Second Galactic civil war.
Or the rise of Caidus, Or "Hier to the Empire, the movie" or any other story from the EU.

As I've said
At Length
NUMEROUS TIMES
I'm expecting, AT BEST
" Lip service" and little nods.

Basicly, Juuuuuust enough to say that those events that transpired in the Novels/EU/Comics COULD have happened, without coming out and saying that they did.

Be realistic, from a filmmaker's perspective, which is easier.

Coming up with COMPLETELY NEW material to fill the 35 year void of time that is going to have passed from the end of ROTJ, to the start of this new film,
Or picking and choosing aspects that you like from what is already written, and using that as a starting point?

This would also preserve the goodwill establised with the MANY MANY fans of said material, as well as not put off anyone from buing any novels or comics that may get published in the future.
After all, if enough people start to take the mindest of
" They're just gonna retcon this out of the story later, why should I even bother reading it", that would eventualy start to hurt the bottom line.

I've posted them before, but If you like, I can give specific examples of the " nods" i'm refering to.

As for the Vong specificly... They have that visual Aestic that Abrams seems to like... and they are generaly VERY tall... and by this point in the timeline, are at Peace with the galactic alince...

Perhaps that 7 foot actor isgoing to Play A vong?
Food for thought. It could just as eaisly be a wookie, or a Transdocian, or Any other race.
