Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Han doesn't make that decision though, it's out of his hands. It's not selfless at all, not like his past actions. Vader, the Empire and Lando control his fate. Han really isn't sacrificing anything. I seem to recall his character being forced to experiment the carbon freezing process, not martyring it and volunteering himself so Luke isn't harmed.

"Han is a bossy, arrogant, self centered prick at the beginning of ESB (he really is a pretty big jerk to everyone, Chewie included)"?

In the beginning, doesn't Han go out on a rescue mission on his own? He risks his neck when he could be out settling a price on his head for selfish reasons. Doesn't seem self centered to me. Sure, he's arrogant and bossy, but that's mostly towards 3PO.

And you make no mention of Luke. What is Luke in Empire without Star Wars other than "random warrior who gets ***** slapped by an abdominal snow man that is told by some weird old dude to go to a Dagobah system and be a Jedi". WUT? We don't even really get to see him "chill" with his friends in Empire other than the medical chambers, so at what point should we care that he cares that his friends are in danger?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I hope we talk about Ep VII soon ….

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

In all my years here I think this has to be the stupidest SW conversation I have ever witnessed. :lol

True, Han does risk his life for Luke. But he's so damn cocky about it I don't even know that you could say with 100% certainty that HE felt he was risking his life. He doesn't like to know the odds because because he really comes across as invincible in his own mind. Its like he takes crazy risks at the drop of a hat and always believes he'll come through. Luke's rescue, the asteroids, attacking the Star Destroyer, attaching to the Star Destroyer, shooting at Vader, and so on.

With all we saw Han go through victoriously in just ESB alone its perfectly feasible that he would have believed they had a fair shot of escaping if they all went down fighting. Who knows what kind of crazy chain reaction Chewie could have caused if he got his hands on a Stormtrooper blaster.

BUT, when it came down to other people spearheading those risks, and for the sole purpose of saving HIM he DID consider the "odds"...and told them to stand down.

I've already mentioned Luke. We didn't need to see him sharing a beer with Biggs to know they were buddies in the previous film and we sure didn't need to see him high fiving Luke and Leia on Yavin to understand quite clearly that they were all very good friends in ESB.

"Which SW film offers the greatest standalone viewing experience?" is the stupidest conversation you've ever witnessed? Um, yeah, nothing stupider has ever been discussed pertaining to SW before....

No, it's not the substance, it's more the subtext.

Becuase you guys are essentialy agreeing.

You're both saying that ESB is not as strong a film ( lacking the same degree of impact that it currently has) without the pretext of ANH.

Your point is that its still a god film either way, and I think THAT'S where it's getting hung up.

No, my point is that's its still a better film than ANH, even without the lead in from ANH.

Ohhhh... Well damn if that isn't the most interesting point of such a stimluating topic, I don't know what is. :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Stimulating enough to keep you sitting here wearing out your F5 button. :lol :yess:

Yes I am clearly glued to the topic and it's 40+ bumps of off topic conversation. Ow. What a scorcher. Maybe a new topic should be started Mr. Mod? :dunno

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

If George were directing that wouldn't matter a damn. George would find a way to make him be awful :lol

Yeah he was great in Serenity.

Well I did add so he wouldn't suit a star wars film but I didn't want to lower the tone ;) I hope this one is true. Get Karl Urban in there as well...

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Chiwetel Ejiofor was good in Children of Men also. Great movie.

Also he was considered at one point for the 11th Doctor.
