Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

No, my point is that's its still a better film than ANH, even without the lead in from ANH.

But that's a bit of a "chicken or egg moment" isn't it?

I Agree that ESB is the stronger of the two films.

But I think it is stronger BECUASE of ANH pre existing.

Yes, you can say that without ANH, ESB is still a good movie.. but stop and consider for a moment.

Without the existance of ANH, ESB would likely have been a vERY differnt film, and we must wonder if it would have ben as good? What scenes would be different, changed, or outright removed becuase of the complete abscence of ANH?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Of course we can't say how history would have gone if the movies had been released differently. But I've seen people post "whenever I watch ESB I have to immediately put in ROTJ or it doesnt feel complete." Or even in this thread a few pages back "ESB is good but ANH has the edge because I can watch it as its own movie that doesn't need a lead in."

Right now. Even with ANH completely engrained in our DNA there are people that claim that ESB still actually needs the live viewing experience lead in to truly appreciate.

I disagree with that. I've watched ESB more than all other SW films by far. When its over I immediately feel the urge to...watch ESB again. Not ROTJ. Not a ANH/ESB marathon. Its that good, and holds up on its own that well. It absolutely would be a different movie without our first hand knowledge of ANH. But that *different* movie would still totally kick ***!

Maybe I'm just better at filling in blanks than a lot of people here. But I don't watch a movie like Top Gun and sit there totally confused as to why Maverick would risk his life to rescue Cougar at the beginning, or Raiders with its prior history of Indy and Marion, or ALIENS with the queen drifting out in space and say "What came before!? What are the details of their entire relationship!? Wait, technically the big bad guy is still alive!??" Nah, I can handle that stuff and just appreciate a well told story, however "incomplete" it may be based on standard formulaic conventions.

YMMV. :)

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

ESB (IMO) is just meat. Sure it's good/great, but would be nothing without the bread holding it all together.

1)ROTJ
2)ANH
3)ESB

...now I'm gonna run and hide. :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

you better keep running… ! ;)

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Chiwetel Ejiofor was good in Children of Men also. Great movie.

Also he was considered at one point for the 11th Doctor.

Didn't know that, that could have been quite something if it had happened.
