In the very first outline of Return of the Jedi according to J.W. Rinzler, Palpatine was going to fight with a lightsaber. So it wasn't something that GL retconned for the prequels.

Palpatine's line in the actual film about it being a "Jedi's weapon" retconned the outline, so yes, the PT by extension retconned ROTJ. :)

I personally never really thought George was making a solid distinction there for him to later ''contradict''. A sith is a jedi, a 'dark-side' jedi. Both can have lightsabers. Although it was my preference that maybe Yoda and Palpatine were beyond using them.

Then it further disproves your point. "Ex-Jedi" =/= Jedi. Vader was a lord of the Sith, hence the "Darth" title...yet, he had a lightsaber. Tarkin's "ancient religion" comment was referring to the use of the Force (which both sides do), but you knew you used that out of context. :wink1:

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (12/18/15) Discussion Thread

Darth should be a name, not a title.

Emperor, Lord, Senator, Princess, Captain, Commander are titles.

Darth, Moff, Han, Palpatine, Wedge, Numb Nuts (Falcon pilot) are names.

So Darth Maul should really be called Fred Maul. :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (12/18/15) Discussion Thread

As far as I remember it, "Darth" is short for Dark Lord of the Sith. I don't have a problem with it being a title

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (12/18/15) Discussion Thread

So you think Tarkin thought Vader was a Jedi? :lol

He recognized that Vader was an extension of the Jedi ("you are all that is left of their religion.") Ex-Jedi or not he clearly kept some of their trappings. No other "Sith" was an ex-Jedi or Tarkin wouldn't have made that comment.

Well, Dooku was an ex Jedi, but that's PT...

To Lucas, Darth = Dark. So Vader's title was Dark Father. To counter Khev's upcoming point, in the first draft Prince Valorum was a Sith Lord, so the concept of Sith and Jedi were long established even before Tarkin's dialogue was finalized. So there was a distinction between the light and dark sides of force-users. So they didn't give Vader a lightsaber because he was a "former Jedi."

Technically Darth was a name and not a title I believe. Why else would they sometimes refer to him as Lord Vader? I would think Lord is more of a title term and not Darth. Like others said Darth was a name that meant Dark. Then again I am guessing. I never really gave it much thought until now. :lol
