I don't like flashbacks either, not in Star Wars. It breaks the fairytale story/saturday morning serial approach. Lucas had a very controlled and specific editorial approach to these films. All of them OT and PT. The screen wipes, the approaching planet shots when location changed, all based on old serials, flashbacks are not a simple storytelling device in this context.

Regarding the Disney aspect of these movies, they will be kiddified, like Rebels. That doesn't mean a bad movie, but there are just too many damn toys to sell to eliminate ANY part of an audience with darkness or violence. Overall I would expect Return of The Jedi levels of tone, with a less scary emperor. Kids need to want the toys.

Disney wouldn't have allowed any of this stuff

Again... Disney did show people being hung (including a kid) and carting off dead bodies at the beginning of POTC: At Worlds End. There is no reason why they can't make a new Star Wars movie "dark" enough.

Thank you, I was just about to post something along those lines.

While it's not going to be gratuitous or disturbing violence, people need to separate their expectations from Disney's animated films. It will be family friendly, much like ANH was, and I dont think charred bones will be considered overboard by the Mouse House. Even the cut-off arm was pretty antiseptic looking. We definitely wont be seeing children murdered on screen, or implied ala ROTS.

Hard to believe this is actually happening isn't it? I certainly never thought we would see an Episode VII come to reality in our time.
I'm gonna bite the bullet and see it before the Hobbit although I started to lose the will to live watching the extra long version of Hobbit 2 last week.

I don't think anyone was really saying it has to be "dark enough" just good! But it will be Disney'd to an extent, it's crazy to think it won't be. That doesn't mean it won't be good, just different than we have seen before.

Don't compare POTC, anything Marvel has done or any other Disney franchise to Star Wars. This is the real deal. Mass market gold. Lightning in a bottle, they got it and they will SELL it. Every age, every market, race, gender, species. Expect to see Force Awakens dog chews in the pet stores.

If ANH was being made now, Disney would not have allowed the severed arm, the charred remains. Not in Star Wars. And it's not just specific imagery but tone. If anything feels to challenging for the under 10's narratively, it will be simplified and obscured. Hopefully they can do it in a way that can work on several levels, kids don't notice the adult stuff, adults embrace the clever use of lighter elements. I would imagine JJ is in for great fun in the edit suite with Bob Iger looking over his shoulder, I hope he has some final cut clause in his contract. Kathleen Kennedy could be the saviour of Star Wars overall.

I did a Disney meeting a couple of years ago, about a movie which hasn't been made yet. You would not believe the crazy conversations and rows of blank faced marketing people with notepads. It's not a place where creativity flourishes. :lol

I can buy ANH dog chew toys right now so Disney isn't doing anything different there. I brought up POTC because everyone seems to think Disney is going to make these like a cartoon for 8 year olds but they have done "dark" tones before and Pirates was also a pretty big cash cow and the darkest tones were in the 3rd movie when they knew it was a cash cow. Also, other than one arm (which really could have been left out) and the skeletons name one scene in the entire OT that Disney wouldn't do today? Go on, I'll wait. Its not like the OT was Natural Born Killers, it was pretty light and kid friendly too. I'm just saying how about lets wait and see what happens before everyone condemns it.

Eff the PT and quite possibly the ST. Give us the OT - the one true OT, no special add-ons or gimmicks, no '97 BS - in a deluxe DVD/Blu-ray/Digital HD/Whatever collectible set.

Include all-new making-of documentaries and featurettes, including cast and crew recollections of the experience. Be sure to have George, Mark, Carrie and Harrison on-hand. For $100, for a limited time only. That is all I need.
