I don't want to pull the focus from Episode 7 here but I read about this kind of thing all the time - How badly do people REALLY want the "original" theatrical version of Star Wars as released in 1977-1983 released on Bluray or DVD?

The "Original" versions, to be accurate and truly the versions seen in 1977-83, would include all those unsightly white boxed matte lines around all the ships in the outer space scenes. Is this REALLY what people want to see? Matte Lines? They were removed for the special editions and I don't remember hearing anyone complaining that they were not there any more and wanted them back. What about that crappy Emperor with the wrong face and wrong voice in The Empire Strikes Back - should that stay in too even though it looks and sounds NOTHING like the Emperor we see in Return of the Jedi? Also what about the improved sound? Do they really want the old sound mix too? Or the original pale almost white colored lightsaber blades instead of the beautiful looking vibrant colored lightsaber blades? Heck there is a moment where in the first Star Wars where Old Ben's lightsaber blade actually isn't even colored in (its a few seconds when he is fending off Vader's blade). Would today's audience accept that or anything less then perfect special effects? Please understand these are questions and not to be taken in offense or as an attack on anyone.

How would it go over today if JJ Abrams opted for that old school technique of compositing models in backgrounds and did not clean up those matte lines? Would people cry foul or would they salivate all over it saying "Yeah! THAT is how is should be. Just like the original films I remember!!! Hooray for the return of Matte Lines!!!!" I doubt it. The fans would be lampooning the film for it's horrible special effects, all the while insisting that practical is the ONLY way to go. (Remember that even Return of the Jedi had Matte lines in the original release in 1983).

I think that if the fans who want the unaltered original versions of the original trilogy on Bluray got their wish that they would still secretly long for the new polished and cleaned up effects. The old effects were ground breaking at the time but the film industry has come a LONG way and if JJ Abrams did the new film JUST like the old ones people would be laughing at how fake it looks (all the while calling photo-realistic CGI dinosaurs fake looking as well...) That Force for a Change clip he put online, in my opinion showed a VERY fake looking 1980's looking creature walking around behind him. I actually don't like how it looks at all and I was 7 years old in 1977 when Star Wars was first released. I think it is best to use the correct tool for the job - if CGI gets it done use it. If practical gets it done - use it. I guess I am not a purist at heart but I loved the prequel trilogy as much as the originals. I saw them all at the theater and bought the figures as well as the films on video. I can't wait to see the new trailer and here hoping we don't see matte lines around the ships.

I've always said I'd like the ability for myself to handpick the changes to keep and the ones to get rid of. I don't know if that could be done though.

I'm not against cleaning up special effects but I am against superfluous added sequences, character-altering changes, 'Nooooooo's, that sort of thing.

Lucasfilm Digital, a $9.95/month subscription service where you can watch the movies how you want the way you want. Pick and choose what effects to include or omit, etc.

Think of the money to be made, George/Disney!

I think when people say "unaltered" I think they mean just not having all the changes Lucas made to them, meaning a change or addition that changes or alters the story. Cleaning up matte lines is perfectly fine. So is fixing lightsaber colors and sound mixes. I don't think anyone would complain about that since it doesn't alter the narrative. I personally think changing the Emperor in ESB would be going too far.

Where's that Cary Grant 'get out' gif when you need it. :lol

Will 50 cent Grant suffice. :lol

Yesss.

OT a la carte for everyone!

We live in an age where the magic of science can create a version with a million check boxes on the main menu to cater the viewing of the movies to our exact desires. Dewback = yes, Jedi Rocks = chemo vomit.
