I guarantee that there were dozens upon dozens of different ideas for the posters and this is simply what all the executives could agree on--probably the "safest" option that then went through a dozen more revisions.

Reminds me of the Dark Knight posters too:

I think they're fine. They show off the characters. The extreme closeups are compelling and dynamic and the one eye adds a little bit of interest.

New posters of Finn, Rey, Han, Leia and Kylo. Not sure I believe all the Finn isn't really a jedi theories, I can see both him and Rey becoming jedis though.
