Not complicated. :wave

If the light and dark sides of the force are at their simplest form allegories for good and evil, why would Disney Wars want to promote the idea that to be the best and strongest force user (like their latest role model princess) it is no longer sufficient to just aim to be good (use the light side). You now have to exert the perfect balance over light and dark / good and evil and be Gray... That just seems like weird message to promote to impressionable younglings.

Gandalf surpassed his powers as Gandalf the Grey when he became Gandalf the White.

Yes.

The Force cannot be simplified to a mere "Good and Evil". Its far more complex.

No.

No, it's not.

Yes.

No.

The conflict between darkness and light is a theme which resonates with people. That is why Star Wars was the huge success it was.

The grey in between doesn't resonate with most people unless you are the kind that is interested in minutia.

Yes.

While the good vs evil was great in the OT I don't think that alone was the primary reason for its success and cultural impact.

Good vs Evil was obviously nothing new in cinema in 77.

I think it was the setting, character designs and how that good vs evil was encapsulated within that unique mythology.

And that's about as significant as meaning gets in Star Wars.

But "muc complexity". It reminds me of that story where Tolkien thought about writting a LOTR sequel, where Sauron is outed as not-such-a-bad-guy and the Orks want to take revenge on the rest of Middle Earth for slaughtering them or some ****. Then he scrapped that 'cause it was damn terrible. Not every fictional setting needs an overly complex EU that adds shades of grey to obvious archetypes in an effort to make it "patrician".

It's fascinating to me that 30 years of sanctioned EU was just 'thrown out' by decision. It reminds me of Constantine and how the Bible came together.

Some of you more faithful here, just imagine if the world decided to just throw out the Bible one day and start over? If everything you've come to understand and believe as truth was just uprooted and cast aside to start again?

Or "Nocturnal Fears," the proposed E.T. sequel that was more in the tradition of Gremlins/Critters.

I get why the EU was thrown away, but they could've at least held onto the Old Republic stuff. Alas, twas not meant to be.

The only thing thats really changed with the EU is that it's been labled Legends. It's still there. It's still not canon. It's still mostly terrible.

This is how factions start.

For what it's worth, the screaming and kicking has stopped. Mostly. There are still places where EU diehards rage, but some have either accepted it, or just consider the Post-Disney stuff non-canon. As for me, I still kinda consider the OR stuff canon. Disney hasn't dwelved there, and Marvel's SW line is very small, and focused only in the Movie Timelines, so for now, Revan, Malgus and the others still count.

'Legends' is a brilliant move. Every 'world' needs legends. Like Cyclops and the myriad of other myths we all know to be false but, for some, fun to pretend with.

Revan, Malgus and Nihilis are like Medusa, Cerberus and Hydra.

That's a pretty cool take on it. But I'd still like some canon version or the OR era. I loved all the architecture, influence of the Jedi, threat of the Sith, all that jazz. Another ongoing like Dark Horses "Knights of the Old Republic" wouldn't hurt, really.

In spite of all we are hearing, I will be VERY surprised if any of this "grey" stuff even gets mentioned in any of the movies.

I'm digging the costume change. I like Kylo's cloak, reminds me of the cloaks the Jedi wore in the CW.

edit: why can't we post pictures from imgur, reddit, etc here? makes absolutely no sense.

maybe not the exact term, but all the philosophy behind it seems to be a major role in the story, like it or not.

Maybe. But the overall story will still be Dark vs Light; good vs evil. If anyone thinks differently they are just being Goofy. ;)
