“Save for Alec Guinness, the cast is unmemorable. Lucas apparently blew his entire $9.5 million budget on visuals.” — Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune 1977

In all seriousness, I can probably see what he means if you look at it from his point of view and take into consideration the time in which he made that statement. He mentioned Alec Guiness as the stand out, and he later went on to be nominated for an Oscar for that role. The 70's was one of the best if not the best decade for American actors in American cinema, with guys like Brando, Deniro, Pacino, Nicholson, Christopher Walken, Gene Hackman and plenty of other actors playing some of the best film characters in Hollywood history and giving amazing performances, and then you watch Hamill, Ford, and Fisher, and it's like watching a high school play by comparison.

I don't use the "memorable" as criticism, because it's completely up to the viewer and also often selective/voluntary, there's nothing in movies that makes something inherently "memorable", that something is unmemorable for someone is in no way a criticism.

If anything, when a critic says something is unmemorable, that's a testament to his credibility and ability by criticizing something he can't remember.

Having said that, I would agree if he said the cast was bland and generic instead of unmemorable.

Well, there are two key things that stand out from the quote to me, Guinness being the stand out or as the critic described him, the most "memorable," and mentioning the film's emphasis on "visuals" which can refer to not just the special effects, but the costumes, as opposed to the acting quality.

Considering how Guinness was the only one to get an Oscar nomination for his role as Obi Wan, and the decade of the 70's being so strong in the acting category and drama, I can assume that from the critic's point of view, there must have been some sort of emphasis on the quality of the performances by the actors in order to make a character "memorable." I'm not saying that's what he meant, but it's possible.

Carrie Fisher is better than all of those guys. Because she's a woman. #Womensmarch

I remember getting Mayhew's years ago for $30. $150 for his is ridiculous. $100 for Hamill is cheap considering that in Dallas this March he was charging $195.

Is it the actors charging that or the venue after paying their appearance fee? Either way that's a ridiculous price to have someone sign a picture.

I believe the actors set the prices and the venue gets a small cut. All that money is in addition to what the venue pays the actors to be there. They are making absolute bank. Throw in the fees for photo ops and some of them are easily making six figures a weekend.

If you listen to Norman Reedus from The Walking Dead, he says he makes more money from conventions then from the show.

True. Even then, in 1977, the acting was harshly criticized. Even from people who absolutely loved the movie. They would justify it by saying it was Wizard of Oz for adults back then... because no one would say Oz had great acting but everyone loves that movie too.

I met rene auberjonois once and completely butchered his last name. He was really cool in how he 'corrected me' but made it a fun experience all the same!
:lol

He's awesome.
I'd bet $100 on him not bein' able to perform "Les Poissons"... :monkey3

Seriously ....the acting in SW is B level at best......

Clown is right....it's our jaded eyes that still see this through a 12 year old lens.

Ford , who had done some great work since then, (Regarding Henry, Witness, Patriot Games) was pretty average in SW.

Hamill is almost bad in a few scenes.

Fisher was actually better that both of the guys....

Cushing was better than Guinness, and let's be honest , James Earl Jones was by far the best one......and we never see his face.
