Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD
Boy, does Star Wars know how to waste some awesome looking villains. Maul, Boba Fett And now Snoke, His Royal guard and Phasma. I was just starting to like Snoke... oh, well. At least they didn’t try to redeem Kylo, that would have been lame. And why did anyone think Snoke had turned Kylo evil? He wasn’t even around when Kylo supposedly turned bad. And Luke freaks out because of what he senses in Kylo? His dad had killed off entire populations and maimed his ass but he still saw good in him. Eh, I now get why Hamill isn’t too high on this movie.
P.s. I really wish I hadn’t ordered the Figuarts Rey and Kylo now. I’m a dunce.
Ok, just got back from watching it with my kids.
I stayed spoiler free, and didn't read too many reviews.
I had hope for this.
I thought it had to be better than TFA.
I was wrong.
This is the weakest of all SW movies.
It's as derivative as TFA, but Abrams can pull off a nostalgia ride (for further proof watch Super 8). Rian Johnson can't, so it's just derivative. And even more blatantly an unimaginatively than TFA, which is actually quite a feat.
There's just too much crap to process right now, and I don't think I even want to dissect this movie that much, so here's just a few quick thoughts.
- Luke, well, the less said the better. What he did, or rather, what he almost did, is just so wrong for the character that it doesn't even remotely make sense.
- Leia. I kept trying to find that feisty Princess in there somewhere. Alas, there are only a few precious moments. And that scene. Oh boy. It is so cringe worthy I can't even try to explain it.
- The humor. It's not that SW doesn't have its fair share of bad/silly humor. But here... just the entire opening sequence is just the perfectly wrong type of humor. As soon as I saw that sequence unfold, I knew I would be in trouble for the next two and a half hours. And I was right. Milking scene anyone?
- Speaking of opening... the opening crawl sets you up to watch ESB reloaded (inward groan). And then, as the movie unfolds you realize, with growing horror, that you're not just watching ESB reloaded, but ROTJ and ROTS reloaded! I'm not kidding. Entire set-pieces and dialogues are lifted from ROTJ and ROTS almost word for word.
- The space battles are somewhat underwhelming. The opening battle is kinda silly, and the entire "chase" is just ludicrous. Hux is right when he wonders "what is all this for if we can't even destroy three cruisers" or something to that effect. Oh yeah, the movie has its share of "meta" commentaries ("you're a nobody, you have no place in this story"). Back to the "chase", may I remind everybody that Imperial Star Destroyers were perfectly capable of keeping up with the Falcon and keep harassing it with their fleet of fighters? Oh well, I guess the FO really isn't that good at building ships. Maybe that's why they're so frigging ugly.
- The entire Casino sequence felt completely out of place. I guess its only purpose was to set up the closing scene, and that seems to be there for the sole purpose of setting another slave boy with powers story. Sound familiar? Yeah, they ripped off TPM as well.
- The entire deconstruction of the "hero" (I'm thinking of you Poe) in general is just... ugh.
- Phasma. I thought this time around the hype built up going into Ep VII would pay off. Uhm. No.
-
The Yoda puppet. Terrible. They wanted to do it the old-fashioned way, I get it. Guess what? It didn't work.
- Music. As uninspired as TFA.
- Cinematography. Competent.
- Snoke. I suppose the next trilogy will be a prequel to explain him?
In the third act they had one chance to make every thing alright. There is one glorious moment when you think "my god, they're actually going to do it,
they're going to kill Finn
" and they don't! And then you think "my god, it's even better,
they're going to let Kylo wipe out the entire OT cast
" and then they don't!
Oh, and it's so easy to tell that he's not there in that fight.
But there were some things that I did like.
- Kylo and Rey's interaction was great. I really enjoyed that.
Ok, wait, there has to be something else I liked... I guess it'll come to me.
So.
Yeah, I guess I can pretty much write off SW now. I really liked RO a lot. But I have no real interest in these movies anymore. Oh, I'll watch them, I'll even go to the movies for the spectacle, but the magic is definitely gone.
I really miss George Lucas.
Let’s give the benefit of the doubt. I wonder if Carrie’s passing really shook up what EP IX was heading. Meaning Mark’s not the best of shape ..where they thinking since Harrison wanted to kill off Han and Carrie actually died, maybe they didn’t want to risk if something happened to Mark while filming EP IX so it’s best to change the fate of Luke in this. Did anyone stop to think about that

Saw it finally. Maybe a C? You know, there is doing something different and fresh and then there is ignoring what makes beloved characters loved by generations of fans. Did Snyder write all of Luke’s story in this movie?
It's like a new trend; making lighthearted jokes at themselves, like in Thor Ragnorak. Gets a cheap laugh, but I think it kills the integrity of the movie.
Comparing the comedy in Ragnarok with the comedy in TLJ is like comparing Eddie Murphy and Carrot Top. It’s not a new trend... the PT movies were panned for taking themselves too seriously. The ST has tried to fix that since the first meeting between Poe and Kylo Ben about who speaks first...
Ragnarok was built from the ground up to be a comedic venture with a director with a comedic background in film. That worked really well, and if it fell flat for you then that’s a bummer, because I for one thoroughly enjoyed it the best out of the Thor trilogy.
And I’m glad you brought that up too because I’ve also seen some shade thrown at the MCU in this thread... “they’re trying to turn Star Wars into a Marvel movie!” First of all, no, not even close. Secondly, if it were the case, is it so terrible because Marvel movies are horrible pieces of junk? Lol, well then now I see why so many people are drinking Haterade here. If Marvel movies are a low bar to set, then I see very little chance JJ will be getting any love here come winter 2019.
My brain still can't process the fact that there isn't a single lightsaber on lightsaber fight in this movie.
That and the fact that the green lightsaber only appeared in awful flashbacks.
How do you sit down, write this, and tell yourself it's a good idea? How?
If Rian's trilogy treats Force users and Force lore this way, it's going to be my worst cinematic nightmare (well, next to TLJ).
That's going a bit far. Just have GL write the treatment or an outline, then have a decent writer and director make the movie. Just keep GL away from writing most of the dialogue and directing the actors. That should be a formula for success.
