See i’m not hating on Rey being that way.

My thing is so Rey can’t do it but with Luke it’s ok?

How old was Luke when he started then he didn’t even complete his training but fans now expect him to be a master, why?

He got his ass handed to him by the emperor.

Luke was always an outsider looking into that Jedi world never having fully gone thru the system and you know what the system was a mess anyways and he recognized that.

Sure maybe because of his victory at ROTJ and seeing the ghosts he was happy at that moment in time but like everyone else that grows up you eventually start to lose faith in any large preachy institution.

This (couldn’t resist)

These films aren’t my SW and that’s ok. The least of these films issues is Rey or Kylo and their training or abilities.

The same unexplained phenomena happened over 40+ years ago with Luke. I’ve been able to ignore things for a loooooong time because I enjoyed the adventure. I’m not going to fault this franchise for doing the same thing, it has other problems to worry about.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

Its 2017, along with diversification, this series is trying to keep its protagonists female. At least that's what it seems like to me.

Maybe you can develop your own all male and undiverse version called "Space Wars." The opening can be set in a beer hall in 1930's Berlin and the main alien characters can all be wearing white space suits and spend the first half of the movie plotting to send the other aliens who wear black, brown, and yellow space suits to a far away galaxy never to be seen again! It will be a lot better than TLJ...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

I'm going to watch Dunkirk now, and imagine that the fighters are X-Wings...just like Lucas did.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

My kids don't enjoy the OT. Heck, i can't even watch ANH anymore (gasp i know, worst fan ever).

Maybe it's just the esthetics of it all. Right now, my boys are playing with BB-8, Kylo and the lobster guards figures. And not because i force them too lol, but they had the choice and none of them picked up Old Man Luke.

The wheel spins. I take what i like from Star Wars. I'm not telling anyone to like TLJ, but i don't want anyone telling me not to like it.

Well yea, I don't blame your kids for not going straight to the old man action figure. Have you tried a young OT Luke?

Because ive seen nothing but kids love the OT. Why do you think Darth Vader merchandise is still absolutely everywhere?

Or, we can envision a BDSM version of Star Wars episode 9, where Lando is dressed in studded Space leather with a Space Ball Gag shoved in his mouth, tied down, whipped and flogged by a female space alien while muffling to himself, "This is progressive. I'm a modern spaceman. This is progressive. I'm a modern spaceman."

Like I said in another thread, if Rose tried to prevent Han from leaving the resistance, she'd have gotten the Greedo treatment, and it would've saved us that tedious excursion to Space Vegas where she wasted half an hour talking about her feelings.

I love it!

Going to save that one to watch after the movie.
There's also one with the Dambusters, but I think Lucas took more from 633 Squadron with the similar shots of the gun turrets etc.

Rey didn't even bug me in this, not nearly as much as she did in Force Awakens. I mean they doubled down on the flawless/overpowered Mary Sue thing, ignoring any of the criticisms we all had from 2015, but at this point, the character was everything I expected her to be going into film 2. I knew she wouldn't need any real training, I knew she'd school Luke, it's all predictable at this point that there is no use in fussing. It's clear that they have no intention of giving her character any real struggle or conflict, and they definitely won't risk alienating little girls by making her darker or, god forbid, losing a limb or two. She's the only boring constant throughout these new movies. I don't see them going anywhere different with her characterization in 9.

But she did get a perfect and symmetrical scar on her arm that makes for a cool symbol to put on merchandise.

Really says alot about the way people care about a story when they start trying to make it about real world politics and some tim foil hate wearing brainwashing agenda....

I mean its a MOVIE....too bad so many people have made it such a core of their lives to have such a visceral reaction to it.

Some of these comments are kinda sad.....like people lost an actual real relative or friend cause they didn't like a MOVIE.....

Meanwhile , in real life, the world goes to hell and no one is paying attention because Disney ruined MuH Star Wars....

Pretty much....I don’t find a lot of kids or folks in general in my circle that watch SW in any form.

My wife is 2nd grade teacher and while I’m on vacation I helped in her classroom on Friday. Kids know Vader, Chewie and the droids but they are not engrossed in OT. To make a comment it’s been proven kids watch OT just fine isn’t supported by much. Not a single kid outta 24 had Luke, Han or Leia as a favorite character, it’s all the new kids plus ones I mentioned above.

This stuff is for them wherher people want to accept it or not.

that kid has nothing to do with anything....it was hyberbole...

it was meant to cap off the main concept of the film which was the force can be in anyone.....not just Skywalkers or choosen ones (which to me was the biggest failing of the OT). I always took that to be the case from OT....

The entire premise of the film was that anyone from a pauper to a king could have force powers and it was the choices you make on what to do with those powers that mattered.......kind exactly what OT and Luke's arc was about. I mean if it turned out Luke was just some dust farmer....would you have hated OT?

They are setting up a future where the resistance can be rebuilt......and the common folks will be able to rise up against the tyranny of the first order WITHOUT a hero taking charge and leading them single handed to victory....

I thought that message was pretty clear.

Except all the parents or people with young kids in their lives (including myself) that love the OT?

To say that kids aren't engrossed in the OT isn't supported by anything.

And regardless of original intention, this "stuff" has become for everyone.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi SPOILER DISCUSSION THREAD

This film rocks. Ticks so many boxes on that socially progressive checklist. Glad to see a big budget film have the cajones to get with the liberal agenda.

Now what we need is for the next instalment to finally take the brave and honourable step and put a gay couple front and centre of the film. Poe and Fin in a homosexual relationship. Young kids need to learn about these things. Oh and Rey totally has to turn to the dark side. It'll be really good for all the many young girls who look up to Rey as a role model.

But what happens if those elements are addressed in 9, too late?

Are you going to write off these movies just because your theories didn’t pan out in 8?

It's not about "the theories not panning out". They could have made Snoke Obi-Wan Kenobi resurrected and Rey the daughter of Phasma and made Leia capable of ripping a Star Destroyer in half with the Force (like in that awesome Gif). If they had made a GOOD movie with good characterizations and good story beats I would have liked it and would absolutely be looking forward to JJ's return.

The problem is Johnson [and Kennedy] basically sealed the deal on everything that matters or could matter with the crap laid out in TLJ.

You and your friends may not like it but when a movie blows past a billion in revenue (which I'm sure TLJ will do), it says the general audience liked it even if hardcore fans didn't.

Hard core fans are the ones who see it multiple times. This will be the first SW movie 1) I didn't see multiple times in the theater and 2) I won't buy their Blu-ray. Casual fans won't either.

I'll be shocked if this climbs to the top in box office, compared to the other SW films. I expect it to fall off really quickly and I'm guessing they think so too (hence the demands they put forth for the 1st time to theaters.)

2nd grade isn’t young kids? 24 to be exact and not a single one talked about Luke, Leia or Han?

I also have friends and family with younger kiids. My informal poll has a vast sampling and easily 35-45 kids of various age ranges. I can say I did the same thing last year at this time with the wife’s classroom (tack on another 20+ kids) and the results are pretty consistent.

I simply see the opposite with these films. Vader, Chewie and R2 have survived not much else

Agreed, but we also need to find out that Poe was born a woman. It could be like the "I am your father!" moment for millennials. Poe can invent a laundry list of Space pronouns, demanding that the Rebellion memorize them. Refuse, and they get shoved out of the airlock.

So what questions were asked in this poll? Do they actually not watch the OT or did they just not happen to mention them?

Because every kid I know loves them more than any other of the movies. Definitely more than the prequels. Hell, I was at prime demographic age when they came out and I hated them.
