I wonder if the comedy element had been dialed back if it would have gained more acceptance....

1. Luke just drops the saber rather then toss it over his shoulder....walks away...
2. No milk scene...I viewed this as Luke showing Rey his contempt for her view of HIM as a hero....
3. Have Rose actually die.
4. Have Leia destroy the SD.

This would have made a much darker film...which is what I think a lot of people may have wanted...lord knows the trailers certainly hinted at it.

Khev sees the film pretty much that same way I do. In the end Luke did what he always did....saved his sister.

In the process , he also came to terms win his Hero status and sacrificed himself to further his legend, which will do more for the Rebels than his actual presence....

Kylo shirtless scene was very cringe...its kinda embarassing when compare it with Anakin nightmare shirtless scene in ROTS.

Yes, they could definitely have skirted round some of the comedy, or approached it with more subtelty.

Think how dark Empire Striks Back was from beginning to end. There was humour in it, but it doesn't interfere with the plot or the point that the fim is making.

Thinking of Luke as one of Conrad's men exiled from civilization to the 'wilderness', An Outcast of the Islands as a title literally fit the bill. Most of the book covers depicted Southeast Asian jungles.

But there were a few bleaker looking ones:

Had all of the above happened instead of what we got and Leia died destroying the ship (omitting the flying nun scene), the film would have been watchable. Not good, just watchable.

The best way to repair TLJ is by erasing [all of] TLJ.

I think that is missing the main point that a lot of people are having issues with.. Well me at least..

Oh yes that statement wasn't meant to cover all criticisms by all people just those who were rubbed the wrong way by the things that TLJ dared to do differently. :)

I only do it because you make it so easy ;)

:lol

Actually I do it because I respect you film tastes and you as a member.. Plus you are always respectful to others.. If I did not feel that way I would not take the time.. So you should take my deconstruction as a compliment..

And that I do. :duff

I summed up the last of my feelings in the last post I just did.. Just have a better plot surrounding all these shocking moments. I am not sure there is much more to say... Other then I hope I explained it well enough..

I'd say that you definitely have. And I think our preferences for certain films (outside of SW/ESB which are perpetually perfect) often ebbs and flows over the years so it'll be interesting to see where TLJ falls for you and I a decade from now. I'm sure we'll still be here chatting about things so it'll be fun to find out, lol.

I for one did not think the humor ruined this film but I was not crazy about all of it.. But to your points.

1. That scene did not bother me.. But now that you say it.. I would have preferred just dropping the saber.
2. Had the milk not been dripping down his chin it would have been a little less disgusting.. Again I had no issue with that scene.
3. Yes Yes Yes... It just would have at least gave her character more of a point.
4. Maybe... I don;t know.. It would have been a gut punch for sure. Its such a highlight of the film in its visual and sound design.. My issue is just what lead up to it and what it took to get to that great moment.

This would have made a much darker film...which is what I think a lot of people may have wanted...lord knows the trailers certainly hinted at it.

I agree that the above mentioned moments would have made it a darker film and IMO would have helped with the weight of it.
Usually your middle chapter puts your characters in a very dark place.. This film only put them in a room with some poor lighting.

Ya know TFA and TLJ both killed off two of my childhood hero's and it did not effect me in the least. Yoda and Vader dying in Jedi still packs more punch.

Both films treated our hero;'s death with a quick passing.. Hell Qui Gon got a better send off in TPM.

Not really a complaint mind you.. Just weird how little of an effect it had on me.

Can all of you talk a little more about what you liked and what you hated about this film and then repeat it a hundred more times? TIA

I liked the end credits, and the previews before the movie, I liked the popcorn I got and had some alcohol to get through it. That's what I liked about it!!! Oh I forgot, I like that my dad paid and had bonding time ranting about this movie.

I said to Rian, "Jedi's don't give up. I mean even if he had a problem he would maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake he would try and right that wrong." So right there we had a fundamental difference, but it's not my story anymore. It's somebody else's story, and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective. That's the crux of my problem. LUKE WOULD NEVER SAY THAT. I'm sorry. Well in this version, see I'm talking about the George Lucas Star Wars. This is the next generation of Star Wars, so I almost had to think of Luke as another character.

Anyone still defending TLJ's absurd take on Luke Skywalker after reading this, really needs to reevaluate their love for SW. Hamill is blatantly stating Johnson's garbage strayed so far from the source he can't even connect the Luke of TLJ to the Luke of the OT.

I agree with Hamill 100%. The real Luke Skywalker wasn't in TLJ. He's still just about to meet Rey and become reacquainted with his father's lightsaber in the final moments of TFA.

After a week of contemplation, endless discussions, and reading many reviews/opinions, I've come up with three words that encapsulate TLJ:

Infantile
Amatuerish

and utterly Illogical

Mark actually referred to the TLJ version of Luke as Jake Skywalker :lol

Nah, that wasn't Luke either. Many of the same criticisms of Rian's Luke should still apply to TFA Luke. He's still a guy who abandoned his friends and hid away while the galaxy went to ***t again. And did so while his sister carried on the fight. Even Han buggered off. Just an awful continuation of the OT all around - complete reversal of character arcs for no good reason, pushing the events of the OT into total irrelevance when the aftermath ended up being the exact same ***t all over again - all victories were moot. TFA alone did this. TLJ merely compounds it.

So TFA and TLJ are the Terminator 3 of the SW franchise, which would make Luke, the John Connor from T3.
