SW VS. LOTR #10: Darth Vader VS. The Witch King

Lord of the Rings goes into week ten of our 15 part poll marathon with a slight lead over Star Wars. This week's admittedly uneven match will return things to a tie. Or will it?

This dark and imposing figure once lived as a man, but ultimately gave in to the temptation introduced by the chief villain of the saga—and having fallen, he now hides his loss of humanity under a dark cloak and frightening mask. Seemingly swept away after an attempt to chase down the hero, he returns in the next film to continue his pursuit—but eventually meets his end in the midst of the final film’s climactic battle. While not the highest ranking villain of the series, he is the symbolic face of evil to the audience, and he impacts the story line by striking down an aging but heroic leader brought back out of semi-retirement for one last battle.

Vader is more of a tragic/tormented/conflicted figure. The Witch King is just evil and creepy through and through. My kids see Vader and they know that Anakin is in there and that in the end he will be a good guy again. The Witch King just freaks them out completely--I think that he is the scarier looking one of the pair. (But I still voted for Vader.)

Yeah, while the WK is evil with no boundaries... And admittedly scarier... Vader takes the cake. The duality of his nature and his Teter-tottering destiny make him a much more interesting villian. You never really knew what to expect right up until the end.... And any man who kills children and wipes out all he knows simply because he would not let his wife die is insane enough to win my vote.
