Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

As much as I don't mind T3, they should have stopped after T2. As Vince Gilligan, creator of Breaking Bad, said of his show on Colbert - There's no story left to tell. Same here.

James Cameron said that exact thing. He was sensible, that's another reason why I could never turn on T2 despite the abomination sequels it inspired. The original creator of the series decided it could go there, a protector Terminator, but then be done. He knew how pointless it would be to retread the same ground in further sequels. Seeing his old friend Arnie continuing to have a job and enjoy popularity is probably the fullest extent of his endorsement of the later films. I mean when asked if he would ever go back to Terminator he said something to the effect of ''too many people pissed in that particular soup'' - not exactly complimentary.

Yeah, I would never throw T2 under the bus. It's not the movie's fault that every successive installment tries to ape it.

I've likened T1 to Cameron's Blitzkrieg Bop and T2 to his Ninth Symphony and I'm sticking to it.

Hey, maybe they'll revisit T2 in a sequel, literally!

Poop all over it like what they're doing here with T1. Hell, they're already half way there with A-1000.

Maybe that kid who's in everything, Ty Simpkins, can play John Connor. Maybe in a flash forward. Give him a Public Enemy T-shirt and tiger camo jacket.

I like the way you think.

Awesome. If they do then the evil Terminator sent to 1995 (T2 year) should be a TX played by Ming-na Wen....who will wear identical clothes to Kristana loken's version. And similar to the new T-1000's ability to detach and throw parts of himself like spears so she should be able to deploy her weapon arms like drones.

Don't forget mind controlled cars!

She can take over John Connor's little dirt bike.

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

So long as John's stunt double is again a midg...uh, dwar...uh, little person, it's all good. It's almost 2015. We're all about equal opportunity.

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

T2 inspired crappy sequels through its own great ideas. All the self referencing in T2 actually feels fresh because it's commenting on the subversion of expectations in regard to the Terminator character - then T3 made it repetitive and dull. And from what I can see, Genisys will make it excruciating to sit through.

AFFIRMATIVE.

Second downside of T2 - the Terminator as protector.
Actually it is one thing that made the sequel work. It wasn't just "same heroes, same monster, new film" formula.
What makes it feel like a bad concept is that the same iconic killing machine DO NOT KILL.
Yes, it doesn't because John orders it not to, but we know the real reason - Schwarzenegger didn't want that.
Otherwise they could write something about his programming to justify the killing of bullies, policemen, etc.

I personally prefer T2 to The Terminator. But we've been seeing Terminators as protectors ever since. It's all been played out, none more so than that concept. What, humans can't do the job anymore? Is that supposed to be some kind of wry social commentary?

Oh ****. :slap

Re: Terminator: Genisys (July 1st, 2015)

I may not like what T2 did to the Terminator "mythos" but I can't deny that Cameron had some genius ideas there. The T-800 as protector was fantastic because it was so unexpected. The whole movie was just so brilliantly sideways because of that. Other than "come with me if you want to live" and initially knocking the T-1000 down with a bunch of shotgun blasts he copied none of Reese's moves. His entire approach to protecting John was different in almost every way. It was pure joy to witness him use his "Terminator" abilities to good effect. Grabbing John and turning around so the T-1000 can shoot his back, engaging the T-1000 in hand to hand fights, having such a bull in a china shop approach to everything. The cops treating him like the original T-800, it was great.

And what all sequels have failed to realize (save possibly TS) is that it wasn't the fact that Sarah was shooting out the back of a SWAT van that made it great (which we see her do in TG again) it was the fact that we just didn't know how each scene would play out. And by always copying T2 in a literal sense with each new sequel they guarantee that they'll always fail to make the same magic.

Boom. Nail on the ****ing head. T2 is one of the best sequels of all time, and for me, better than the original. But that was it. Two great movies telling everything that was worthwhile in that universe. Everything after that was rehashed plot points and one liners. This sequel looks like the cumulative effect of everything thats happened since the original jumbled up into a ridiculously goofy derivative offspring of Hollywood.

Yeah, in the early/mid-90's after T2 came out no one I knew hoped for another Terminator movie that had two cyborgs trying to protect/kill someone in the present time. We all wanted future war (if anything) and that was it. But even then it would have been just for ****s and giggles because we already knew the outcome.

Cameron should have thought up a way to show the Time Displacement machine being destroyed after Reese and three Terminators entered. Imagine if BTTF 3 didn't show the DeLorean getting hit by the train. We'd be up to BTTF 6 or 7 by otherwise.
