Saw a very special advanced screening of Genisys in NYC tonight. I really enjoyed it. For me, it's on par with Rise of the Machines and better than Salvation, but still waayyyyyy below the first two movies. I thought the way they handled the new timeline stuff and the alternate versions of scenes from the first movie was fun and handled well. Arnold was great as the Terminator (albeit he is quite jokey throughout, but gets some pretty good action moments), IMO Emilia Clarke did a great job evoking Linda Hamilton, Jason Clarke was solid, and Jai Courtney was decent but totally miscast as Kyle Reese. JK Simmons also has some good and humorous moments.

Sure there are plot holes, it suffers from the lack of an R rating, and on paper, putting the original terminator with an old Arnold terminator, and a T-1000 and kinda spoilers but not really if you've seen the trailer:
John Connor as a new, advanced terminator/human hybrid
seems a bit like nutty fan fiction. But overall, a very entertaining movie.

Oh yeah, and this guy was at the screening...

:thud:

Arnold set up the screening for redditors, did a great Q and A after, and stayed to take selfies with everyone in the audience. Amazing night!

It was definitely a new sound mix though. Arnold's pistol when he shot the first Sarah sounded totally different and there were a couple other little audio tweaks throughout the film. A very pronounced "classic ricochet" sound when he gets hit while shorting out the power at the police station was absent and replaced by another sound instead.

A "new" new sound mix? I know after years of watching my VHS copy that when I finally got a DVD copy I was extremely disappointed that they changed the sound of the .45. It wasn't until I found out that switching the sound from the 5.1 mix to the original stereo mix that had the original sounds that I could even enjoy the DVD.

they all say Jai Courtney is horribly miscast and has zero chemistry or charisma in the film.
Seems to be a very poor choice...
There one major issue I have with Terminator Genisys is that Jai Courtney is a boring action star and has almost no charisma on screen. As Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke tries to make the love story work, I don’t feel any chemistry between the two actors. Courtney, who is even handed some funny lines that should pop, delivers them so horribly that the audience in my press screening was left in stunned silence.

Okay after doing some research I'd say that the re-recorded sound effects weren't "2015 new" but probably the "new" audio supervised by Cameron for the 2001 DTS DVD. I hadn't realized that these changes are 14 years old now. The original Mono audio is just still burned into my brain.

So his .45 longslide had more of a "pew pew" sound (almost like it had a silencer) instead of the original and satisfying BLAM BLAM BLAM. I'm sure you guys know what I mean. :lol And then I couldn't put my finger on the plasma rifles from the future sequences because they sounded familiar but somehow different. Now I see that Cameron changed the blasts to match the sound of the rifles from T2. As far as "revisions" go I can actually handle little things like that.

For some reason though I really missed that "richochet" sound when Arnold gets hit when putting out the power in the police station. It was such blatant stock audio used on the original track (and honestly sounded a bit out of place which is probably why Cameron removed it) but for whatever reason I always wait for that sound when I watch that sequence.

But...the positive far outweighed the negative, at least in a movie theater. The rumbling bass of the HK's crushing the skulls sounded like I was listening to Terminator 2 or even a modern film, the audio really elevated all of the action in fact. The police station attack truly sounded like all out war. When he was shooting up the back of Reese and Sarah's pickup truck at the end you could almost feel the bullets impacting all around the auditorium.

I was even surprised at how well the low budget visuals held up on the big screen. Really the only point of distraction was EASILY seeing Arnold's two unblemished eyes through his sunglasses during "I'll be back."

I can't imagine that Linda Hamilton ever believed that her boobs would be up on the big screen 31 years later. :lol

So early reviews have been terrible ? Big shock considering a cast of TV actors with a made-for-TV director, starring an old Arnold. Not surprised in the least.

Pretty much worst case scenario then. At least you got to meet Arnie.

Actually I think worst case scenario would have been if he said it was "waayyyyy below the LAST two movies." :lol

I liked Salvation because it had the “balls” to do something different. T3 was basically the same blue print as T2 but with a woman and CG effects!.

Nothing in audio land is worse than the gun shot sounds being changed in The Good the Bad and the Ugly for the bluray release. :gah:

Was about to post the same thing. They were changed for the dvd remasters. The packaging and everything is beautiful, but those gun shots..... I only watch the original dvd issues.

I think Alien Resurrection is worse than Crystal Skull myself. There is literally nothing I enjoy in Alien 4. At least Crystal Skull has some good scenes.

I don't even remember Alien 4, except that Ripley was now a super human for some reason and the voice of Chucky was a bad guy. I think TG will have a few good scenes, but there's already too much silliness going on for it to be a true sequel to T1 and T2, at least Alien 4 looked and felt like and Alien film.

Clown Prince has seen the movie and didn't like it? Hmmm, best endorsement so far.... :monkey3

Oh, I have no doubts that you'll be entertained by it, thus making it the best Terminator film in the series. The scene with the T800 jumping out of a helicopter or a cat playing a piano, will be up there with the "I'll be Back" scene. :lol
