Just got back from seeing it.....
First off....what was James Cameron on when he did that promo spot jonesing all over this movie? Did I see the same one he did?
If this movie tanks, it won't be because of Arnold....he was the best thing in it.
There are pieces of a decent movie here but....the script is AWFUL. Sloppy and lazy. Some of the cast was pretty ill-fitting for this, that Jai guy was the worst. Even without comparing his take on the character to Biehn, he comes up short...generic and uninteresting....part of that can be laid on the script, but he just wasn't a good fit for this character.
Clarke's interpretation of Sarah Connor took some getting used to, but she was okay. Where she falls flat is any scene she has to share with the Jai guy...no chemistry there...but her scenes with Arnie were fine.
Jason Clarke was awkward as John Connor...just weird and uncomfortable to watch. JK Simmons did great with what he had....
The movie is just all over the place...the weird reenactments, the copycat action scenes with no real sense of excitement and danger...a whole thing feels like "who cares...it can all be wiped away with another time paradox or something"....so it's hard to get invested in characters or the story when it flails around aimlessly to a lackluster ending.
Again, the only thing that held it together and moved it along was Arnold. It was actually kind of cool, that whole "Guardian" thing he had going on.
I don't know if they can squeeze two more movies out of this based on what I just watched...say what you will about "Salvation"...it at least had a story that tried something a little different...it skipped the whole over-used time-travel thing and focused on just Connor and Wright's interweaving story. In a better director's hands, it really could've rocked....but I liked it more than this.
This movie needed to be "smaller"...more focus on the characters and less "time-paradox" comfusion and "let's-change-it-up for- the hell-of it" crap...
If Paramount wants to save this...they need a better script/story next time around....
