Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

Is there really anyone who doesn't know the Avengers is coming out? They've been prepping audiences for years now.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

Personally I think both films will cash in heavily at the box office.

This movie looks fraking amazing though. Can't wait.

Avengers will make more money than any previous Marvel Studios film. The Dark Knight Rises will make less money than The Dark Knight.

Which one of the two will make the most? Avengers, worldwide. The rest of the world cares relatively little for Batman. But in the US, it could be close.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

Honestly I think tdkr won't live up to tdk . Joker made that movie imo

Yeah, I think next to The Hobbit that the Avengers will finish second on the for wwbo and dmbo.

And before TDK there was Begins, which for me is actually the better film of the two, and there was no Joker there.

TDKR doesn't need Ledger or the Joker to be a great film. It just needs a solid story centred on Batman.

Disagree.

TDK made about $450MM outside the US, that is a good $100MM clear of any Marvel Studios films' intake outside the US thus far.

Plus I think the general awareness of Batman as a character is a heck of a lot more than any of the Marvel heroes. Of course, the marketing for Avengers is going some way towards addressing that.

I personally think Box Office wise both Avengers and TDK will be huge hits. There's a good chance that Avengers rakes in more though purely due to the mass marketing blitz it has received. I agree that TDKR is probably going to end up less than TDK Box Office wise, but it all depends on how much it is marketed in May and June.

I agree that Ledger put that movie over the top. Hardy's Bane and Cathaway just won't be able to surpass the power of Ledger's performance combined with Eckhart's tragic Two Face. It will be a great movie, but I don't think it will make a billion dollars like TDK. Even the choice of title shows that they can't escape the shadow of the last film looming over the new one.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

The Batman movies have made less internationally than domestically. Iron Man 2 made about the same, and Thor and Captain America made more internationally--much more, in Thor's case. Avengers will have an international gross equal to or greater than domestic, while TDKR will make less internationally than domestically. The question is where the domestic grosses will settle.

So with Batman movies less popular internationally than in the US, but the Marvel heroes at least as popular and in some cases even more popular overseas, this will be an interesting box office race between the two films. I think Avengers will come out on top internationally, but it's too close to call a winner in the US alone.

While you are correct that the Batman films have made less internationally than in the US so far, I think we may see a change this time around given the marked rise in awareness of both Batman (following TDK's huge success) and Nolan (Inception was a huge hit internationally). We shall see.

In any case, all that matters to me is that I see quality films in both Avengers and TDKR

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

I would go so far as to say that TDKR might be a better crafted film. Nolan is a better director and his crew members are Oscar caliber. But I think I'm going to have a lot more fun at Avengers. As much as I loved The Dark Knight, it is not a movie that I want to watch over and over again. It's a little long and exhausting. Avengers looks like fun and the ultimate popcorn movie. I put Nolan's work on another (higher) level. So while I respect Nolan, I will probably go see Avengers more times than TDKR.

But I want them both to be great films--and when people see a great film, it makes them want to go back to the movies soon and see another great film. If these two both make tons of cash, it's a good sign for the future of comic book movies specifically and big budget films in general. I don't want the failure of John Carter to make the studios afraid of big investments. So a few megahits this summer will show the suits that it is still worthwhile to greenlight these kind of big films.

As per my post in the TDKR thread, I said pretty much the same thing in different words, except, I'm more partial to the Nolan style; a little less action and a lot more food for thought

Yea and it also needs a good villian. Sorry I dont think Bane is as threatning as the joker was. Hope I eat my words.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

I'm a Batman fan, so even if The Avengers blows The Dark Knight Rises out of the water, I'll still be the staunchest of allies to TDKR.:lol

I'm really curious who takes the box office this year. Currently, everyone is shouting The Avengers from the rooftops, but one might be inclined to think that a big part of that is how close it is, and at this point, the anticipation is at its climax for most people. What we also have to remember is that The Avengers is just the beginning, a lot of people think that the other solo films set the foundation for The Avengers, but I think that The Avengers is not the pinnacle, but just another piece of the foundation for a larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Batman, however, marks the end of something. The stage has been set, and this is it. I'm willing to bet that once TDKR is only a few weeks away, people will realize that this may be the last time they see the caped crusader on the screen for what could be quite a while. I think that's when we'll see the battle heat up.
