I remember when AC-3 Dolby Digital laserdiscs were $60 each. Over $100 for a CAV Box Set. And that was in 1990's dollars. When you bought a movie it was a treasured keepsake. :lol

You took the words right out of my mouth!

The bare bones discs were about $40, but I remember spending $150 for the Brazil Criterion and $125 for The Silence of the Lambs Criterion. Many box sets like Aliens and Terminator were $100 as well. Then there was the big daddy of them all, the Star Wars Definitive Edition, that was $250.

I had a lot of laserdiscs, still have quite a few actually, but I don't know where I got the money to buy them all. If only I had invested it instead!

Don't know how many I had, I'd venture to say 200, probably still have close to 100.

Back in those days, you had more "disposable" income. I know I can't believe looking back how much I could get compared to now. So much now goes to necessities like utilities, insurance, etc. :(

Yeah, I "disposed" of it, alright. Kills me now, when I think of it.

As Jye mentioned above, I even bought some of those full priced VHS tapes, before I made the transition to laserdisc. I remember owning all 3 Star Wars movies and even Little Shop of Horrors at $80 a pop! I remember the look of incredulity on the face of the video store clerk when a kid in his low teens came in to actually buy those overpriced videos.

I never paid the exorbitant VHS prices. Almost pulled the trigger on $100 Die Hard. Almost. I remember Top Gun being the first to hit retail at $26 so I got that one along with everyone and their brother. I believe the much delayed E.T. came out at an affordable price too because I knew a lot of people who picked up that one. Then Batman 89 which I skipped. Affordable VHS tapes got pretty commonplace after that. The Holy Grail of course was the 1990 Star Wars box set. Then when I realized that Laserdisc offered widescreen Star Wars and extended ALIENS I switched over and never looked back.

From VHS to LD to DVD I love that it's all tangible, a collection on my shelf not unlike a Hot Toys figure.

Actually for me movies are the greatest collectible.

$50 is a stupid price for movie discs. Even with a plastic ship lol.

In this case, not really. I have it PO'd for $48 CDN which might go down. If you get a 3D movie around these parts, it's about $34 in most cases. In this case, you get the UHD along with the 3D + a Blu + the digital code + a collectible. To me it's not a bad price. To me ridiculous is the IT TV movie that's out for PO with the T-Shirt, which is $54.97 USD. Now that's ridiculous.

I don't know if I'll get the one with the ship unless that's the only way to get UHD and 3D together. I don't have the first two movie Amazon exclusives.

As of now it seems like it.

You can't play that game, LOL. One time I tried to calculate all the money I "threw" away on collectibles, movies, video game systems, video games, jewelry, clothes, etc., and I just stopped. I figure I could be rich now if I had invested everything.

Hell, I could have gone to college free IF I had ONLY accepted the grants I received, and not the financial aid. The grants paid my tuition in full, financial aid was a low cost loan to help me buy useless junk.

Yah, the VHS tapes were always overpriced at initial release so the video rental companies (don't miss you at all, Blockbuster) could get theirs first before the movies were released at an affordable price point. Ah, the good ol' days...

IT should cost no more than $15 on release day, then be $9.99 shortly after. That's what I'll end up paying when I buy IT. Lately I've been paying around $10 for region free 3d blu rays from Amazon UK. If it's a new release I'll rent it then buy it later for cheaper. That's my new system and it's saving me lots of money.

We've all got so used to paying $5 to $20 for blurays that anything over $20 now feels expensive. :lol

Meh, if I had the full 4K set up this minute I would have no issues. But as I am still in need of the Projector, I have no desire to get many of these releases at this price point.
