That portrait and statue depicts a very important part of the film where Alfred (played by the late great Michael Caine) warns Bruce about Bane. The exposition regarding the pit and Bane’s backstory really highlight the trials and tribulations that Bruce will face. It's hard to choose a favorite scene in TDKR, but this is one of the most powerful. It’s universal message about crossing all boundaries, underestimating your enemy and facing all odds is up there with ROCKY. It instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves to fight against adversity. Alfred’s foreboding warning to Bruce about what he’s up against and about how, sometimes, a man RISES is a very important message, crucial really. That we the audience, like Bruce, aren’t Batman anymore.
