Still a debate over comic accuracy ... and I'm not sure that has much relevance, particularly in the case of a downballot villain like Bane.
The thing is, Joker is an extremely culturally well-defined comic book villain, even among people who have never read a comic book. Perhaps the most well-defined aside from maybe Lex Luthor. And, even then, Nolan changed the Joker quite a bit ... few jokes, no permawhite, cut smile, etc.
Bane, like Ras before him, just isn't well defined culturally. Very few non-comic readers (a vocal minority) know who Bane is aside from the mouth-breathing hammerhead from Batman & Robin (which they're hoping to delete from memory). I think he may depart from the comic even a bit more than Joker did ... more along the lines of Ras.
So ... he's 5'9", and extremely muscular -- and wears some kind of ventilation thing rather than a wrestling mask.
I think we're bound for a significant redefinition of the character -- we'll get some of the core characteristics, but a lot of re-interpretation. But, like you said, time will tell.

I'm with you on this one. I actually am not disappointed with the choice Nolan seems to be going with, because I know it's gonna work out fine and be a good movie. But to say that something from the comic is silly and ridiculous while everything Nolan does is practical and realistic or whatever. . .I just don't buy the argument. It's all fantasy that is only relatively realistic compared with some other comic movies. If Nolan went with the Luchadore mask, it would've been fine and good. He didn't, it will be fine. Same thing with people saying X-Men outfits would be too silly on the screen, but don't blink an eye when Superman wears his red undies over his blue leotards. You want realism, don't watch a comic book movie.I don't see why the comic mask is being criticized now. . .

1) The "ventilation thing" is a non issue for me. Doesn't bother me at all.
2) Where are you getting "extremely muscular"?
3) The public doesn't need to know about the character, they just need to believe he's a threat. Unless Nolan is making BANE a strictly intellectual villain, then he needs to by physically intimidating to be believable.
4) This is decidedly not intimidating going up against a Superhero:
